Research panel randomly pops up - how to DISABLE this unwanted feature ?

EXCEL does this randomly - slows the computer to a crawl - I have to close EXCEL and restart computer to get 10 minutes of work done in EXCEL...  HOW DOES ONE DISABLE forever, in all applications, ESPECIALLY EXCEL, this unwanted "RESEARCH" feature ???

This is so annoying and I have found dozens of folks who have posted the same problem, but cure/fix has surfaced from MICROSOFT...  Microsoft, are you listening ?  How do I stop  RANDOM  pop-ups in EXCEL  ??

Hi

I'm sorry to hear that the "research" feature annoyed you so much. Let me help you with the issue.

Go to File>Option>Trust Center>Trust Center Settings>Privacy Options>Cancel the selection "Allow the research pane to check for and install new service".

I have tried it in my computer, it worked well.

Some of our customers solve the problem by more methods below, we can also refer to it:

1.Add/Remove Programs ---> Microsoft Office ---> Add or Remove Features ---> expand Office Tools ---> disable Research Explorer Bar

2.Press Alt-F11 to open the VB Editor. Press Ctrl-G to open the Immediate Window.Type this line and press Enter:

Application.CommandBars("Research").Enabled = False

Did not work .. sorry.  There must be a bug in the Explorer Bar ??

Also, in my version of EXCEL, in the Options/Trust Center/Trust Center Options/Privacy Options Cancel Section -->

Research Pane doesn't exist as an option - so I can't disable or otherwise customize it to my liking.. So there is definitely a problem with EXCEL (the copy on my computer - fresh, licensed, 2010 Office version)

Hi John

Avoid (ie don't type Alt-R-R) or disable the keyboard shortcu to see if it helps:

File|Options|Customize Ribbon > Keyboard Shortcuts: Customize > Categories: Commands not in Ribbon > Commands: ResearchLookup > Current Keys: Ctrl-Shift-O > Remove.

<<File|Options|Customize Ribbon > Keyboard Shortcuts: Customize > Categories: Commands not in Ribbon > Commands: ResearchLookup > Current Keys: Ctrl-Shift-O > Remove. >>

Oh thank God! Whew, I'm so glad that worked. This has been driving me crazy. I have the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 with Type Cover and it's apparently very easy to hit the wrong keys and have this panel pop up as it's been making me miserable for months. I'm so glad to have it fixed. (should have done a web search in it earlier).

Please be mindful. "The File|Options|Customize Ribbon > Keyboard Shortcuts: Customize > Categories: Commands not in Ribbon > Commands: ResearchLookup > Current Keys: Ctrl-Shift-O > Remove" is not accessible through MS Excel but instead can be found when going through the MS Word menus. I am not sure if this function will also transfer over to Excel but I guess it couldn't hurt to try it. This function is driving some of our people nuts. The research pain to me has no value and instead is only a nuisance.

Indeed a very annoying feature.  Did the fix. It seemed to work.  Then a few months later it popped up again.  It does not let me type and just wants to do some random "research".  It appears I have to mess with the settings again.

Thank you Tylor - this "Research" function has been frustrating me for a while and I have to close down Excel and re-open it so hopefully it will not pop up again.

I do not see the point of this "Research" pop up and why it is so difficult to get out of.

Tylor, thanks much for the fist recommendation, I am using a new surface. Pro 3. My next step was to simply send it right back to Microsoft store had I not saw your fix to this Problem. I am an electrical contractor, doing a takeoff in excell unable to proceed with this side bar research window popping up AND DISABLING EVERYTHING ELSE! Are you serious! The degree of STUPIDITY to actually choose to design it like that as opposed to quick select icon to enable/disable, or work in Parallel is completely beyond comprehension. Pardon the venting.

Hi, you only have to do "Alt + Click"

I did that and it was stopped.
