Repeated corruption of exchange files, SBS 2008, causes backup to error
I'm running SBS 2008 with Exchange 2007 latest SPs and patches. I'm not seeing any errors in Exchange, but the SBS backup returns the error about the application not being available for recovery. I can fix this using ISINTEG & ESEUTIL. I see warnings with ISINTEG that are then fixed. In ESEUTIL, sometimes there are errors, sometimes not. I can always fix them though, then check again. It works for a while (sometimes days, sometimes weeks), then the error starts again! When I dismount the information stores, I see the status as 'Clean Shutdown', so no problems there. What could be causing this repeated corruption? Thanks for any help Andrew

Check your event logs, it could be that you are getting corruption in the database and it just hasn't gotten severe enough to cause a major problem yet. Have you recently updated anything lately, i.e. Firmware, Memory, Disk?? Troy Werelius http://www.lucid8.com/

I think you may have hit the nail on the head. One of the drives in my RAID 5 setup failed. I ran some tests and one of the others was on the way out too. No other data loss though. I've replaced the drives, have to just wait and see if it happens again.

I would personally be a but more proactive i.e. Make sure you have a good backup of your databases and you might even consider taking an offline backup just as a precaution Check your event logs to ensure there isn't a more pressing problem in the disk subsystem, i.e. pending controller failure etc because these things can sneak up on you and then the next thing you know your database is toast. Also realize that backups put a heavy load on the disk subsystems so look close at the times the backups are happening. Once you are sure your disk system is better I would do a ESEUTIL /D and ISINTEG -FIX to ensure the database is cleaned up and stable Troy Werelius http://www.lucid8.com/

Thanks for advice - I did ESEUTIL etc to fix, then backed up immediately. There are only 2 users, plus BES, so nothing too heavy. Nothing in event log other than some DNS problems that don't seem to be affecting anything. I have a SMART test running every hour, so should get notifcation of pending problems. Not sure how a controller failure would present itself - it's the one on the mobo (nvidia)

Week on and all is fine. Looks like it was the HDD corrupting. Just glad it didn't do more damage.
