Renamed IUSR_ and IWAM_ accounts, now IIS is failing
(Using Server 2003 Enterprise R2) I renamed both accounts after installing IIS 6.0 and some programs that use it. IIS then failed to start. I then renamed the accounts back to their original and IIS still fails (IISRESET and IISADMIN). Even though it complained of IIS Admin service not starting, I've traced this issue back to the MachineKeys, but can't seem to get the correct keys to allow IIS to start. Given the nature of the programs installed, I cannot re-install IIS without breaking everything. I've tried renaming the MachineKeys folder and restarting IIS - it creates a key file but still fails. Is there a fix for this? Does it involve the MetaBase.xml file? Something in the registry? Recreate session keys? Anything? Thanks for your help. -T

Nevermind, I found the issue. I had deleted the original c23 key on a couple machines after messing with the MachineKeys folder. I'll reinstall IIS. For other peoples' reference, though, to get this working again, rename the MachineKeys folder to something new, do an iisreset (it will fail), replace the generated c23 key with the old one, do another reset, should be good to go.-T
