Removing Names from the Global Address List
We just started using Exchange 2003 at my office. We dont really have a "IT" person. Me and my partners, (me really) kind of set everything up using how-to-guides from the Internet. Everything seems to be running ok (thankfully), however...we have had to let a few of our employees go recently. I removed them from the Active Directory system and the email account is automatically removed with that. However, I cant figure out how to remove names from the Global Address List. I have not had much luck in finding answers online, so I am hoping I can get some help in here. Thanks for you time.

You can force an automatic update of your offline address book, or just wait it out Also if your Outlook is running in cached mode, it sometimes takes a long time for the address book to update.

Forgive me, I am not very technical savy. How do you force an automatic update of the offline address book? What exactly is the offline address book and where is it?

The offline address book should be generated each evening and the changes will be downloaded by Outlook the next day. You can force a download from Outlook by using the arrow next to 'Send\Recieve' and choosing 'Download Address Book'. You can force the generation of a new offline address list from Exchange System Manager but you might want to read up about it before you start changing those settings. Here's a bit of background that, hopefully, should get you started : Older versions of Outlook would go directly to Active Directory for 'Global Address List' look ups (browsing the gal, looking at the members of groups, resolving names etc). This is fine if your Outlook can connect to Active Directory. The offline address book lets you download the address book onto eachdesktop so that you can access it without being connected directly to AD (when you're not in the office). The offline address book is generated by Exchangeinto an oab file. These oab files are stored in the public folders in Exchange waiting for an Outlook client to download them. If you are using Outlook 2003 in cached mode and Exchange 200x you are probably accessing the oab without realising it. On your Exchange server open up the Exchange System Manager and expand recipients. You'll find a container called 'Offline Address Lists' and probably one 'Default Offline Address List' within there. The default options should be finebut going into the properties youwill find the schedule that it's updated. If the names are still in the list after 48 hours (generally 24 but 48 just to be safe) then it might not be a problem with Outlook caching the names in the offline address book. Maybe address list\oab not being generated or downloaded correctly. Anyway, hope this helps ... post back if you have any other questions or if it's still a problem. Thanks, Mark
