Removing Active Directory from Exchange 2003
Hello,I am running Exchange 2003 with SP2 on Windows Server 2000 SP4. This box is a domain controller. Is there anyway to remove active directory and make this a member server without affecting Exchange? Is this possible? Can anyone let me know if they have done this and if so, how did it go? How did you do it?Thanks in advance.

It's a very bad idea. Multiple things will break, such as IIS, and ... Exchange.. OH, people have done it.. But look at some of the links from the page below. (I was going to add most of the links, but he has most listed. http://blogs.brnets.com/michael/archive/2005/01/24/319.aspx

This is my issue. We have two domain controllers. Both are Windows Server 2000. We are running Exchange 2003SP2 on one of the domain controller. I wanted to perform the following. Add a Windows Server 2003 domain controller and transfer the FMSO roles over to 2003 making this the primary domain controller. 2nd, I want to test out Exchange 2007 on a separate Windows 2003 box. But based on what I read in order to setup Exchange 2007 you require a 2003 domain controller, hence I want to implement a 2003 domain controller. My issue is this, the 2000 domain controller that is running Exchange 2003SP2 is using an OEM version of Windows Server 2000 (this was setup before me). But article KB 555040 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555040) states the following: 11. Do you have the correct version of Windows 2003? You cant install active directory on "Web Server" edition or upgrade "Windows 2000 Advanced Server" to "Windows 2003 Server" (you will need "Windows 2003 Enterprise" edition). Also, usually you cant upgrade OEM Versions of NT4/2000 to Windows 2003 or use Windows 2003 OEM versionas upgrade version. If I am reading this correctly it stating that OEM version cant be upgraded to Windows 2003. I am not upgrading the server, I just want to add a 2003 box as a domain controller. Does this mean the same thing? When I ran adprep /forestprep and adprep /domainprep on the 2000 primary domain controller no errors were reported. No errors reported in event viewer. However, the 2000 server running Exchange I do get errors. I got 9 errors that pretty much looked like the following: Event Type: Error Event Source: NTDS General Event Category: (9) Event ID: 1153 Date: 9/17/2007 Time: 2:32:46 PM User: Everyone Computer: MONTY Description: Class identifier 655568 (class name msWMI-UintSetParam) has an invalid superclass 655563. Inheritance ignored. Event Type: Error Event Source: NTDS General Event Category: (9) Event ID: 1153 Date: 9/17/2007 Time: 2:32:46 PM User: Everyone Computer: MONTY Description: Class identifier 655564 (class name msWMI-UnknownRangeParam) has an invalid superclass 655563. Inheritance ignored. These errors report the same time when I did the schema prep. After a while I tried to run a DCPROMO on the 2003 box but it didnt work. It said the Active Directory schema is not up to date. I am trying to see what my options are. How do I add a 2003 server as a domain controller? Would I have to build a 2000 domain controller with the proper license, load Exchange 2003? Move the mailboxes over and demote the box using the OEM license? I am hope I am completely wrong about this and there is a fix for this. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
