Remove Public Folder from 2003 after migrating to 2010
Hello all Clients: Windows 7/XP and Outlook 2003 We have setup replication of Public Folders between our Exchange 2003 & Exchange 2010 servers. 2 part question 1. Now we want to get rid of Public Folders on Exchange 2003 so it's only on 2010, should I use the option to Move all replica on the Exchange 2003 server? or should I remove the Exchange 2003 server in the replication tab then dismount the store? 2. Users haven't been fully migrated to Exchange 2010 yet. So will the users continue to use Public Folders once we have completed migrated the Public Folder over to 2010? Even though so users are still on the old Exchange 2003 (awaiting to be migrated) and using Outlook 2003 (awaitng to be upgraded)?

They both accomplish the same thing. How you go about removing the replicas from Exchange 2003 doesn't matter. There are, however, folders that shouldn't be replicated to anywhere but their own server. Pay attention to any mail-enabled folders, too. I'm not sure if moving them to another server will recreate the AD objects that are needed for them to continue receiving mail. Those AD objects are in the MESO container. Don't just dismount the database. That will just casue PF replication messages to accumulate in the server queues. When you finish removing the replicas you'll want to remove the public folder store from Exchange 2003 after you modify each of the Exchange 2003 mailbox stores to use the 2010 server's public folder database. You may have to manually modify the site folder server value after you remove the 2003 PF store (you don't always have to do this but I've had to do it several times over the years). >2. Users haven't been fully migrated to Exchange 2010 yet. So will the users continue to use Public Folders once we have completed migrated the Public Folder over to 2010? If they aren't going to continue using them why would you worry about replicating the folders to 2010? I don't think I understand this part of your question. >Even though so users are still on the old Exchange 2003 (awaiting to be migrated) and using Outlook 2003 (awaitng to be upgraded)? Until you've removed all the replicas from the 2003 database (including the necessary site folders) your clients may continue to use the 2003 public folder store. --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP
