H, This article explains how to remove the server from active directory (which would also remove the server from ESM): http://support.microsoft.com/?id=833396 Leif

Since the server crashed was not the only server in Exchange org, you should remove crashed exchange server from ESM. This will remove all references of the server and change user objects that had mailboxes on the server as necessary. If ESM is not working, that would be the only time when I would recommend using ADSEDIT to remove Exchange server from your org. For more details on the procedure, please refer "Remove the Exchange 2003 server from Active Directory" section in KB article mentioned by Leif (above).
