Remove Exchange 2007 while keeping Exchange 2003 up
I have an existing Exchange 2007, Exchange 2003 organization between two domains in one forest. Each is in a separate office. The Exchange 2007 (residing in the child domain of the forest) is going to be decommissioned while leaving the Exchange 2003 server (residing in the forest root domain) will be retained. All users and mailboxes of the Exchange 2007 server will be migrated using move-mailbox to a new Exchange 2007 server in a new forest. Call it a business divestiture. What do i have to do to remove the exchange 2007 server while keeping the exchange 2003 server? I have already broken email twice to the exchange 2003 server while trying to set up connectors between the old Exc 2007 and new Exc 2007 servers.Apparently all email routing was going through the exc 2007 server, even internal email in the excg 2003 office. The exchange 2003 server has its own external email domain and IP. Basically our email hits our external ISP and then autoforwards to external domain addresses for each server. It is supposed to split the email between offices. Is there a procedure for this?

Hi Russell, I suggest you read following article firstly: How to Remove the First Exchange 2007 Server in a Coexistence Scenario http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb310767.aspx For Mailbox: I would like to explain that you need to move all the mailboxes from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2007 Server in another forest. For Transport: I would like to explain that you need to remove any Send connectors that have the Exchange 2007 server as the source transport server. Then, create SMTP Connector of the Exchange 2003 Server for outbound email. You may also need to publish SPF record and Reverse DNS record of the Exchange 2003 Server. If you Anti-Spam agent on Hub Transport server originally, you also need to enable the Anti-spam function on Exchange 2003. For Client Access: You may need to publish the Exchange 2003 to external for OWA Access. If you have any external users which use RPC over Https to connect to their mailboxes, they may need to recreate Outlook Profile. After removing Exchange 2007 server, I suggest you run EXBPA to check whether we have any errors and fix them. In addition, as it is a complicated procedure which based on your configuration, I recommend you submit a case to Microsoft PSS support to have support engineer to help you remove the Exchange 2007 Server. I think it is not proper to perform the procedure in forum. Mike

Thank you. I had found that article previously. I have already executed most of your suggestions. All of the users have been migrated to the new forest. I will look into submitting a case to Support. We have a software assurance agreement so i will submit it through that.
