Removal of the First Storage Group from Exchange 2007 standard server
Iwouldlike to remove the First Storage Group from my Exchange 2007 standard server. However when I dismount the db I get the following errors in the Event log. I have moved all users into new sorage groups. Any help appreciated as I am reluctant to delete the First Storage Group until I am sure these errors will not cause any harm. If I mount this First Storage Group the errors disappear. This leads me to believe this is not an issue with the network adapter. Event ID 8197 Error initializing session for virtual machine LONEX01. The error number is 0x80040111. Make sure Microsoft Exchange Store is running. Also, make sure that there is a valid public folder database on the Exchange server. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. Event ID 4001 A transient failure has occurred. The problem may resolve itself in awhile. What is the new database size you have on server? Exchange 2007 Standard edition has soft limit of database (50GB), you can increase it with a registry key so check the size of old and new DBs and increase accordingly and check if error disappears. How to Modify a Database Size Limit However you moved all the mailboxes so try to remove the mailbox database or remove the edb file which will create new while mounting the DB and check after this.

DB size might not be related but just wanted to make sure, secondly, do you have SP1 installed? If not then install SP1 & URs for Exchange 2007 and see. Run ExBPA and see if it gives any clue.

Service Pack 1 already installed. First Storage Group db is 94GB. A little history - all users were in First Storage Group. We created two additional Storage Groups (London - 55GB and Manchester - 34GB). We then moved all users into these two Storage Groups depending on location. We have two other storage groups, onefor Public Folders and another for Deleted mailboxes. That makes up the maximum 5. We now with to delete the First Storage Group and create a new one called Brussels. I do not just want to rename it. Should be simple but I am very concerned about these two errors that are generated when I dismount the db in First Storage Group. Should I be ???

I think you can safely ignore since when you dismount the store Exchange System Attendant mailbox which is currently on First storage group DB is not available for MAPI logon and Exchange SA services is unable to communicate with it and generating this error in evnetlog. If you want to see internally what is happening then you can increase Diagnostic logging of MSExchange System Attendant Mailbox\General toMaximum with Set-EventLogLevel command which generated detailed logs about itwhen you dismount the DB. But when you remove the First Storage Group DB then System Attendant mailbox automatically moves to another DB so that shouldnt give you any problem. Even though I suggest you to check the DB limit of First Storage group & London in registry if it is 50GB then increase it otherwise you get an information event about it in event log regularly.

Thanks for your help - I actually relocated the System Attendant mailbox manually via ADSI edit and then remove the First Storage Group once the event logged errors had ceased.
