I have a problem to migrate mailbox from exchange 2013 to exchange 2007 back.

Recently We have installed a pilot exchange 2013 and already migrate about 100 mailboxes.

But we still have some problems, and need transfer/migrate some mailboxes back to exchange 2007

i'm facing with this problem couple of days from now, can't move some mailboxes i'm geting this message:

Relinquishing job because the mailbox is locked. The job will attempt to continue again after 5/27/2013 10:27:43 AM.

Try removing the move request and creating a new one for the failed mailbox(es) and see what that does.

Yes, This Thread Not Helped me, There is no problem with our firewall or proxy, and when the guy from your thread mention about waiting hours to move again mailbox this is sensibleness!.

But i tried to do this and it doesn't work, i get same error again.

Hi,

it wouldn't be the first time someone said there was nothing wrong with firewall or proxy only to find out there is (not that I'm saying it's the case). And you shouldn't wait for hours between removing a move request and creating one, it pretty much depends on your topology but can be executed quite quickly one after the other...

So, as far as I can tell it seems to fail whilest trying to create the folder structure in Exchange 2007.

Have you tried opening this mailbox? Does everything seem OK? Just to make sure: is the mailbox in use while moving? (ie: is someone logged on to the mailbox)?

we checked all configurations of the firewall and proxy and we doesn't found any problem in them.

Yes of course the users work in outlook while migrating, but i tested this with other mailboxes that was in use while migrating them and there is no problem doing such opertaion, the outlook client popups message that he disconnected and then he reconnecting again.

I don't try to do opposite action, i mean migrate mailbox from 2013 to 2007 while the mailbox in use!, maybe this is the problem.

I will check this and update you with results.

Hi,

I'm not saying that no one should be logged in into the mailbox, Exchange 2007 also supports online mailbox moves, so that should definitely work.

It seems to me as if the move fails at the same place it did before.

To me, this either points to the fact there's something wrong with the mailbox (have you tried to issue a repair request?) or there is a comms issue. ALthough you have checked, can you confirm there's no firewall or other security device between Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2013?

Is there only a single mailbox you're having this issue with?

Hi,

try initiating the move from Exchange 2013 (for example, start the move from the Exchange Management Shell). You cannot use the 2007 management tools to do that.

Try this (from EX2013):

New-MoveRequest -identity <user> -TargetDatabase <database-in-2007>

I have not... Whatever you do, DON'T CANCEL THE JOB! I got that issue in a test lab migration and I had to blow away the entire setup and try again. Cancelling the job tells the PF's that it was migrated already successfully and won't allow you to try again.

We've had a case open for nearly a month with MSFT technical support and they haven't been able to help us migrate our public folders. It has been escalated to multiple engineers and they have no answers. We are completely stuck at "relinquishing job because mailbox is locked". Technical support had us remove the migration request and we've started over multiple times but keep hitting this same block. I also found the link from Hayley and wonder if there is a way to fix it once you've cancelled the job.

What worked for us after the re-install/migration test, I set the migration job to resume and then bounced the server twice. The job completed successfully.

I did see a reference in the migration instructions about a powershell command that sets it as if no migration has been done.

Ran the cmd and it is showing false for both. Perhaps we'll wait for a quiet time and try bouncing the server twice.

Can you confirm that the job is still in progress "locked". Also at the correct point in migration, did you follow step 6 in the link above, locking the public folders for migration?

On our first public folder migration attempt we got the point of the rules and permissions being migrated -- about 94% complete -- and got permanently stuck. MSFT technical support then tried a lot of different things and they did run the cmd in Step 6, which is actually supposed to be done at 95% according to documentation when preparing for the final cutover:

Set-OrganizationConfig -PublicFoldersLockedForMigration:$true

When that failed, we ended up blowing away the public folder database and recreated it together with the new public folder mailboxes. Unfortunately we aren't at Step 6 in the process right now, we still need to get all the content copied over into the new database and the associated mailboxes. Since that initial attempt, we've never been able to get the process further than initializing the folder hierarchy -- the script says "relinquishing job because mailbox is locked" and it repeats this process every 5 mins.

Yes, probably more like 4x. Plus we've bounced the source server. Another blog post stalledduetomailboxlock talked about:

" rebooting the server and re-running the resume command (Resume-PublicFolderMigrationRequest -Identity \PublicFolderMigration) over and over again and finally, it finished"

This also didn't work.

Upgrading from 2010 to 2013 has been a painful experience.

Tonight we deleted all the public folder mailboxes and re-created them. We then created a new public folder migration request and the results were exactly the same. Here is the error - as you can see the folders never get created:

We finally managed to get the job started again by using the domain controller flag, however, we hit a brick wall when the migration tried to copy the rules and security descriptors. It turns out that this is a bug that was introduced by MSFT in CU2 and will be fixed in CU3. The work around offered was to go back to CU1.

So, if anyone else is considering a public folder migration and you are on CU2, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MIGRATE PUBLIC FOLDERS because it will lead nowhere and you will waste a lot of time.
