Does anyone know a way to redirect the path that's being used for the Microsoft Office Isolated Conversion Environment (MOICE) to securely open Outlook attachments?

The default path is %TEMP%:

• After you use MOICE to convert a file, the default save location is the %temp% folder when you try to save the file.  Also, the %temp%  folder is the default folder when you try to open a file.
• Anyone who has access to the computer can view the files in the  %temp% folder.
• When you use MOICE to convert a file, the converted file is saved in the %temp% folder. The converted file is not deleted from the %temp% folder  when the file is closed. If a file is opened multiple times, the file is converted multiple times. Additionally, more than one copy of the file is saved in the %temp% folder. If you have made changes to the first  copy of the document, the second copy of the document will not contain the changes.

Here's an example:
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp\OICE_3768A43C-7EA5-4F92-BBF9-1A2E29C7BCB2.0\F4B813CB.xlsx

Should be redirected to something like this:
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp\CUSTOMFOLDER\OICE_3768A43C-7EA5-4F92-BBF9-1A2E29C7BCB2.0\F4B813CB.xlsx

As checked and confirmed, there 's no option we can change the default path as it is writen in code level. However it surely can be done by script. If you want to use script to automatically move the folder, this forum will be able to offer you more sufficient assistant.

Also as confirmed, MOICE was developed for Office 2003 and Windows XP user to enhance security. This feature has been replace by Protected View in later versions and is not an integration feature in Office 2010. So its not necessary to keep it.

Thank you very much for researching and confirming your findings.

As a matter of fact, we see the folders "C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp\OICE_..." created by Word, Excel or PowerPoint 2010 when opening attachements from Outlook 2010. I was mislead by the folder name "OICE_.." and thought MOICE was behind it, sorry about that.

So do I rightly conclude that the folders "C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp\OICE_..." are created in connection with Protected View? If so, there's nothing we can do but script that as you suggest.
If not, then the legacy MOICE feature might behind it and could be disabled, since it's basically unnecessary. If MOICE could be disabled while leaving Protected View  enabled, how could this be accomplished?

Sorry for the misleading. Protect view shouldnt create OICE_PID folders as MOICE did. Also Protect view and MOICE are two different solution. MOICE converts the document to a different format and back in an isolated sandbox, thus why you got those folders created.

To break the association between MOICE and Office feature, you can use Command to use to disable MOICE as the registered handler. Move those folders first to other place, then perform steps below, see if it will prevent the folder from creating. Thank you.

You can use one of the following methods to run the commands to enable or disable MOICE for all supported document formats:

1 .Click Start, click Run, type the command, and the click OK.

2.Type the command at a command prompt.

3.Execute the commands in a batch file.

4.Push the commands by using Group Policy.

Note

• The Group Policy method must be completed by an administrator.
• If ASSOC   .doc=Word.Document.8 not work, try  ASSOC   .docx=Word.Document.8 (Change associate type to all new file type in Office 2010)

The following table describes the command to enable or to disable MOICE for the supported document formats:

It sounds all very reasonable to me - the issue is that with Office 2010 installations the folders OICE_PID still gets created, although the output of ASSOC indicates something else:

C:\>assoc
.doc=Word.Document.8
.docx=Word.Document.12
.ppt=PowerPoint.Show.8
.pptx=PowerPoint.Show.12
.xls=Excel.Sheet.8
.xlsx=Excel.Sheet.12

While researching further I did not find any way to control that. Do you may still have another idea where to disable the creation of OICE_PID files or to disable MOICE?

Hi,

I tried many ways to repro your issue and had no avail. Normally Office 2010 and higher version shouldn't generate these folders.

Do you mind share me a screen grab with your program list in program and features? Please mail it to me by:ibsofc@microsoft.com(Please keep the thread url or tittle as the mail subject).

Also do you mind check events log to see if there any related information.

Last I will need you to perform a trace by using Procmonitor.exe, follow steps below:

1. Download the app from here( This is to capture what has been invoked when you open Word for example. You can open a file share to store the trace file and share me the location through mail as well)

2. Double click Procmon.exe

3. Click Filter tab->from the top dropdown list, select process name ->condition "is" -> winword.exe

4. Open Word -> after the ssl window prompt and close the nag window. Please record the whole process.

5. Save the trace files in the shared location and share the path to me.
