Recreated a user account, now lots of undeliverables
Hi, I was having issues with a user account and exchange (permissions not propagating, strange issues accessing server etc..) so I decided the best thing to do was recreate the AD account (Server 2003) and the Exchange (2003) mailbox. So, I backed up old email to a PST deleted the old mailbox, deleted the AD account and created a new account and mailbox with exactly the same details (name, login, email etc..) So, it all looked to be working out fine. But many users have since complained about undeliverable messages. So, I asked them to redownload the offline address book to make sure the users updated details are pulled through. But, users have also been having issues with the cached entries that are stored in the NK2 files as they seem to hold the wrong details also resulting in undeliverables when using the entry. Explaining to everyone that this old entry has to be highlighted and deleted is going to be painful and will take a while to clear. Also, existing meeting requests (person is a PA) seem to be borked too as they must reference the old account, so its all a bit mad at the moment, and though I(think) I know whats going on the users are understandably frustrated. So, short question, is there anyway to ease the pain of this? Can I add any information into exchange to let it know that this old and new account should really be the same thing and get to the correct recipient. Or, any other advice greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot Iain

Because you deleted and recreated the account you've lost the original LegacyExchangeDn and X400 addresses. If you know the original X400 format you can create a new X500 address on that account which will resolve problems with users repliying to old emails from that user. But regarding the N2K cache, there isn't really any option there. I've seen third-party tools which can go through and purge specific entries in N2K files, but that is almost as big of a headache. I don't have time to dig up the article at the moment, but search online for 'LegacyExchangeDN' and you'll see it's a common issue in migations. Typically the users will just have to 'deal' with the change and adapt by removing old N2K entries.

Hello Iain, As Jeff suggested if you know the older address then add as a X500. If you don't know butyou have any of the old mail which has sent by deleted user then open mailbox with MFCMapi and check a property namedPR_SENDER_EMAIL_ADDRESS of that mail, value of that propertyis the same as old LegacyExchangeDn. Add that value as a X500 address of newly created user.

Thanks for the replies guys. I did find some info on the internet about the LegacyDN but then I dont have the X500 option in AD when I tried to add it onto teh users email addresses (I have SMTP and the various others like X400, Lotus, Novell etc...). Is the place it should be added? I have looked in my Exchange Server 2003 pocket consultant book and that does not mention them in the index. So,I seem to be missing somethng here! Thanks Iain

Hello Iain, Select custom address from the list and give E-mail type X500. Refer: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313324
