Recovering mailbox that has been moved
Hello, Trying to restore some items from the calendar for a staff . The problem is the mailbox has been moved to another server. When trying to run ExMerge to extract data to a pst from the old server (Recovery Storage group), I get the permission error "Error encountered getting mailbox information from the private information store database(s) on server "Ex2". Make sure you have adequate permission on the Information Store object. After reading some technical articles, it looks like I have two choices. 1) move the mailbox back to the original location 2) ) modify msExchOrigMDB from the Recovery Storage group on the old server (copy from the distinguishedName where the database now resides). The link here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124938%28EXCHG.65%29.aspx I am a little confused on this page below. Is it contradicting item 2 above? http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb123631%28EXCHG.65%29.aspx The database holding the mailboxes that you are trying to recover was moved to a different storage group after the last backup or has since been deleted. Re-creating a deleted database will not resolve this situation for reasons similar to those that apply to a re-created mailbox. Each database also has a unique identifier, and in Exchange, a re-created database is a new database with no relation to the previous database. Please advise. We are on Exchange 2003 sp2. Thanks, Tnt

You can use Lucid8's DigiScope http://www.lucid8.com/product/digiscope.asp to open the offline 2003 EDB without the need for the RSG and then you can export to PST or recover the data to the new production serverTroy Werelius www.Lucid8.com

Yes, should work fine. Sukh Tried this procedure and it didn't work. Same error, we waited an hour to try it too :). Third party software is probably the better solution. 2) ) modify msExchOrigMDB from the Recovery Storage group on the old server (copy from the distinguishedName where the database now resides). More details on what I did: I restored the database using the tape that I needed onto the old server (Recovery Storage Group). The tape used was before the mailbox move. RSG mounted fine. Opened ADSI Edit and copied distinguishedName where the database now resides (new server). Then pasted that information onto the Recovery Storage Group on the old server attribute msExchangeOrigMDB. Ran ExMerge with same error.

this should defo work, just try to restart the IS service if you can. I only performed some of these restore only a week ago. There must be something you're missing. If you cant get it to work, then you can use a 3rd part tool. One which I am currently using is ontrack. Quest do some too and the obe mentioned above. Sukh

Hi, the easiest way to get the information you need from a backup is by using a 3rd part software. you can try Troy's tools. In my opinion, I suggest you just move the mailbox back to your server. So there will be no problem to run ExMerge. I think it will not take too much time. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
