Recover from Failed Install

I had deployed an exchange server that needs to be removed, however the uninstall fails and the reinstall fails ... see below.

Error while running uninstall:

Error while running install:

Steps taken:

I have attempted running from installation media cmd setup.exe /m:RecoverServer (on the server in question) with the result being a command windows opening and closing and no change to the server.

You need to wipe the server and recover it. That is going to be the most reliable, as Windows is now in this mess between an uninstall and install. Wipe the machine, reset the computer account (do not delete). Then add the new build to the domain with the same name. Install Exchange pre-reqs then do the recover server again.

I would probably then uninstall it correctly and start again. I never like to leave a recovered server in production.

I was afraid of that response. There is no way that I can accomplish that as of right now. This is the server that AD is deployed on and I have no other server to deploy it to right now.

Thank you for the reply.

If the machine is also a domain controller then that is going to make it even more complicated to do. You may get away with running DCPROMO on the machine (Which isn't supported as it breaks Exchange), then wiping, then doing the rebuild and remove/reinstall.

Do you not have other domain controllers?

Excellent example of why you shouldn't deploy Exchange on to a domain controller - and with the virtualisation rights within Windows 2012 and higher, there is no reason why you need to do so.

Hi,

If you install Exchange Server on a member server, do not use the Dcpromo tool to promote the server to a domain controller. Or, if you install Exchange Server on a domain controller, do not use the Dcpromo tool to demote the server to a member server. Changing the role of a server after you install Exchange Server may result in loss of some Exchange functionality and is not supported.

For your question, we need install Exchange server to another member server in your organization, then move all mailbox, public folder, database and other Exchange items to new server. After all, uninstall original Exchange server role from DC. For your reference: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997407(v=exchg.80).aspx
