Recover Mailbox Data task
Can the client's mailox be open with Outlook 2003 while, trying to merge data from the "Recover Mailbox Data task "?

Yes it can be opened, exmerge/recover mailbox data task will be copying data from recovery storage group to original mailbox (which is same way like you open same mailbox at two different place and working on it).
