Recover Deleted Items folder in Outlook
Hi All We are running Exchange 2007 SP3 and Exchange 2010 SP1. My mailbox is on Exchange 2010 which we are trialling. I had a query about the Recover Deleted Items function. From memory, this is folder specific, that is if I click on the Inbox and the Tools > Recover Deleted Items (RDI), then this will show me items that were hard deleted directly from the Inbox only. Whereas if I clicked the actual Deleted Items folder and then Tools > RDI, this would show items that were either hard deleted from the DI folder or after the "keep deleted items for" value. Am I correct? Because when I check my Outlook that is connected to an Exchange 2010 mailbox, whatever folder I click on (Inbox, Deleted Items, any sub-folder of the Inbox), I see the same emails list in Tools > Recover Deleted Items. Also, I can see items in there that I haven't even deleted, they were emails that I have written, but stopped mid-way etc (e.g. to go to lunch) and completed when later then sent. Has the behaviour of Recover Deleted Items changed in 2010? I'm aware of the Single Item Recovery feature but thought that essentially this was a better way to search for and retrieve data.

It used to be that deleted item recovery was folder-specific when items were shift-deleted. Normally users delete items and then purge them from Deleted Items, in which case you would have recovered from Deleted Items. I'm wasn't aware that this behavior had changed, so you're educating me about something new. A quick test shows the same behavior for me with Outlook 2010 and Exchange 2010 that you're seeing. Hello Ed, I read these two great links: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee364755.aspx and http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2009/09/25/3408389.aspx Reading them, it does seeem that the Recovery Deleted Items feature is now per mailbox, not per folder. So that explains why I can see ALLemails that I deleted / hard deleted, regardless of where they were hard deleted from. I can see this causing confusion for users as there could be hundreds of items in there now? Do you know a way to view WHERE the items were deleted from, as we all when they were Deleted? Secondly, I mentioned a point of how some emails that I hadn't deleted did appear to in Recover Deleted Items. Those links mention that Dumpsterv2 now holds different versions of items, but these shouldn't be viewable to the user in Recover Deleted Items. Any ideas on this? Looking at those items I can see in RDI, they were all emails I had open for a long time as replies, and then eventually sent. I assume that either i. Exchange turned them to Drafts after a certain time but once I actually sent them, they were deleted from the Drafts folder, hence the reasonm they are in RDI ii. Whemn they were in Drafts their version changed (but the links do say you are not supposed to see these) Any ideas?

Not having been there when you worked with those messages, I can't say why they might be there.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."
