Read receipts returned as being deleted without being read

We have noticed that when the outlook client is not running in cached exchange mode emails with a read receipt get returned almost immediately saying that they have been deleted without being read.

This happened the other day when sending to someone outside of the organisation. We have since found out that the person did read the email and hadn't deleted it.

We don't get the same issue when using owa only outlook.

We are running exchange server 2013 fully patched and outlook 2013 fully patched.

Has someone come across this issue before, and is there a fix?

Hi

Which CU of exchange 2013 are you running?

Did this start happening? any updates perhaps applied and then it started?

Hi Antony Morgan ,

Lets assume that user 1 is sending an email to user 2 with read recipient enabled on it .In addition to that assume that the user 2 has configured his profile on his outlook with pst as the default mail delivery location instead of exchange mailbox .

So on such case what happens is that ,all the newly received emails on the user 2 mailbox will stay for a second and then suddenly it will moves in to the pst file .

So what exchange think is that those emails has been deleted by the user without being read .But on the recipient end it will be on the pst file .

Note : Microsoft suggestion is to have the default mail delivery location as exchange mailbox instead of pst file .

Please reply me if you have any queries.

Hi

Thanks for the reply, we are currently on SP1 so a little behind on the CUs.

We noticed the issue this week but its not something we do on a regular basis. The server updates do get installed weekly so could potentially be one of those.

I've scheduled in some time to update to the latest CU to see if that solved the problem.

Thanks again

I would go to CU8 for now, CU9 i see some people are reporting bugs.

So far CU8 has been most stable. let us know how it goes.

good luck.

Hi,

I noticed that the issue only happens on Outlook. And OWA works fine.

Please confirm whether the issue happens to all users or specific users. Also start Outlook in safe mode to have a try. If the issue persists in safe mode, please change a computer to confirm whether the issue continues.
