Read and unread information for Public Folder does not work
I have Exchange Server 2007 sp1 with rollup8 Installed on windows server 2003 sp2 r2. We often use mail-enabled Public Folders for general e-mails, such as Sales, Info etc. Some users have access to this Public Folders, they can read and Reply for the messages. If one user has read e-mail, the other one must see, that e-mail was readed. For this purposes, I have unchecked "Maintain per-user read and unread information for this folder" for all mail-enabled public folders. About week all works properly, but now no one can to mark message Read or Unread. And all new messages marked as Unread. I have manually made right click on message and check "Mark As Read", but nothing is happen. This not work from Outlook 2007 not from OWA.Later I have tryed to check, and then uncheck "Maintain per-user read and unread information for this folder" for one of the Public Folders. After that, all messages in this folder became unreaded, andI have be able to "Mark As read", or "Unread" all of messages in this folder (But I don't know, how long it will be work).I can recheck Maintain per-user read and unread information for this folder for All other folders, but I want to resolve this problem, and be sure, that problem will not return in the future.

I have made some investigation and found:After disabling Maintain per-user read and unread information for this folder users can't change read/unread attribute only on new messages (which have received after unchecking ...).After I have open the essages, and click Save. Users became to able to change read/unread attribute of this message. But each of them see only own read/unreade atrr. Now I have question, What can I do to users be able to see share read/unread attr.? If one user have read the mail, the other one must see this!

Hi Sergrey, Have you read the following KB article? Description of the "Maintain per-user read and unread information" setting in Exchange Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929396/en-us According to the article: If you must have a folder that can be viewed by a group of users who must be able to see whether an item has been viewed by any other user in the group, use a shared mailbox. In a shared mailbox, when an item is viewed by one user, the item appears in the Read state to all the other users. Mike

Mike, Thank you for your answer.I did not read this KB before. But why Microsoft has not make share read/unread information for Public Folders? I do not understand why Microsoft make this checkbox (Maintain per-user read and unread information for this folder)?

Hi Sergey, Thanks for your response. I am not a Product Development Team member. I am not sure why Microsoft does not share the Read/Unread information for Public Folders. Regarding the option Maintain per-user read and unread information for this folder, I would like to explain that if the option is not selected, all items in the folder are in the Unread state, regardless of whether they have been viewed by a user. Only after selecting the option, an user can check whether the message has been read without affecting other users read/unread status. Mike
