Read Receipt and Delivery Receipt when sending as a Distribution group

Hi All,

Just want to confirm.

When sending and email with the distribution group in the from address I can't receive a read receipt or a delivery receipt as the distribution group doesn't have a mailbox?

Thanks,

Zarko

Hi Zarko,

Based on my knowledge, if you want to set a read receipt or delivery receipt, you should have a mailbox and this mailbox should be  accessible. But distribution group isn't a physical mailbox, it is simply an email address, so we can't receive a read receipt or delivery receipt when sending as a distribution group.

Your understanding will be appreciated.

Hi Zarko,

Below is kind of old info, but appears still holds true to some extent.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/839949

Q4: Delivery status notifications or non-delivery reports (NDRs) are not delivered to the distribution group.  Why?

A4: Exchange server does not  send NDRs, read receipts, delivery receipts, or  out-of-office messages to members of distribution groups. Delivery status notifications are  sent either  to the sender of the message or to the owner of the distribution group and NDRs are sent only to the owner of the distribution group.  To configure Exchange server to send additional reports to the owner of the distribution group, add the following registry entry, and then set the registry entry to a value of 79:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeTransport\Parameters\DLUnsuppressedMessageTypes

READ The below section  for more details on Exchange 2013:

For anyone coming across this - my issue was that NDRs (generated via transport rules) corresponding to messages sent as the group weren't delivered anywhere. There were simply not emitted. As per Satyajit's reply, the behavior in Exchange 2013 seems consistent to the KB mentioned; also setting an owner to this group and setting ReportToManagerEnabled to $true and ReportToOriginatorEnabled to $false triggered the owner receiving the NDRs from that point on.
