RPC over HTTP for all access??
I have a customer who is asking why we do not use RPC over HTTP for client access on the inside and I cannot think of a reason why not. What are the down sides to using RPC over HTTP for all access?

I don't see a downside. Make it part of your standard build and you never have to worry about MAPI ports and firewalls other 443.
