READ-Only access to a mailbox
Hi folks This question seem to be coming up more and more often, and I do see numerous references to it around the web, but with zero "Centrally-manageable" way of implementing it. Effectively, my predecessors provided a web interface whereby people could grant their Colleagues "read-only" access to their entire mailbox. I say this BUT, effectively they produced this interface as an ASP page with very basic powershell underpinning it i.e. (-AccessRights ReadPermission). I struggle to find anything that actually explains what this "ReadPermission" means or how it can be used (I suspect it just means "you can READ the ACL's assigned to the mailbox), but effectively it does not seem to do what it says on the tin (In that i cant find out a way of granting such a mailbox READ right and having another person actually READ my emails - but not delete, respond etc). I am aware that yes, you can use Outlook to do this. However, for a massive organisation like mine, suggesting that ONLY Outlook be used to do this seems unprofessional really. I'd like to think I could find a way of setting these folder permissions, as you can in Outlook, from a central web-based area. My thoughts around this are: 1)powershell commands exist to provide the correct AD and mailbox permissions, which can be "front-ended" by a web-page 2)Exchange 2010 will allow it? (Haven't seen this mentioned) 3)Whatever permissions that are set "should" allow READ-Only access using the "Additonal Mailbox" and "Another Users mailbox" options in OWA and in Outlook. It "seems" a reasonable request on behalf of the userbase and if we have to mandate that they use Outlook to accomplish this, well that seems a little heavy-handed. Anyone managed to resolve this type of issue?

Hi, I have been looking for the same, but I haven't found any really easy way of providing this on a webbased solution. Normally what I do is manage it centrally with pfdavadmin (exchange 2003+2007) or exfolders (exchange 2010) and then set the permissions from this tool. I also use Symprex Folder Permission Manager from time to time, a great tool, but it is not freeware. /MartinExchange is not just a collaboration software - it's a passion

Hi, Also you can try to grant the read only permission at folder lever by referring to the article below. How to: Setup Read Only Mailbox in Exchange 2003/2007: http://exchangeshare.wordpress.com/2009/07/07/how-to-setup-read-only-mailbox-in-exchange-20032007/ Best regards, Serena Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
