Questions regarding RUS in Exchange 2003
HiWe are using Exchange 2003. We use Recipient Policies to set email addresses. RUS is set to 'Always Run'. We had a curious problem yesterday where the email address of some DL's had been changed to match the Group Name. I have a feeling that it was RUS that did this.Couple of questions I was hoping someone could help me with;a) Does RUS constantly update objects' addresses, or does it only update their address when they are first created and then leave them alone from then on? So, if I created a mailbox and set the address manually, would it stick with that address or would RUS change it at some point in the future?b) Can RUS be run manually for all objects where the 'Update email address based on recipient policy' box was checked (including older accounts)? If so, how?c) Is there anyway to find out if RUS was run manually?Any help appreciated!Cheers

Hello,a) RUS updates the proxyAddresses when it is created as well as modified if 'Update email address based on recipient policy' option is selected.Further Details:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/253770/b) Yes, if options is selected to update email address based on recipient policy, it revises the email addressed based on recipient policy applies on the object.c) I guess for the past events you can not find but you may increase the diagnostic logging of Address ListSynchronization,Proxy Generation andLDAP Operations and see if it is giving any error or the information about the address changes in future.Troubleshooting the Recipient Update Service (RUS) using Event Logs - Part 1http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2004/07/07/175444.aspxAmit Tank | MVP - Exchange | MCITP:EMA MCSA:M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

Hi AmitI tested this in both my lab and production environment. Our recipient policy is firstname.surname@domain.com. RUS is configured to "Always Run" for our domain.I carried out the following tests;A) Create new account, let RUS create the email address, and then modify it manually against the Recipient Policy (e.g. firstname@domain.com)B) Create new account, create email address before RUS can take effect. In both cases, RUS did NOT modify the manually created address to change it back to the policy setting, even though the RUS box was checked on both accounts. In the MS article you quote, " Sets the proxyAddresses attribute for users based on recipient policies. It may not set it if the proxyAddresses attribute has been manually added." Is there any setting in Exchange to force RUS to update the address (apart from the RUS checkbox on the account)? I am just curious to know why RUS did not change the address. Also, what does "proxyAddresses" mean, is this the primary SMTP address, or one of the non-primary SMTP ones?Cheers

Hi, Just i would like to add some more points in between you both :)a) Proxy address means is secondary or alias smtp address assign to object part of primary oneb) How much time you have left to let create SMTP address when created new mailbox in your environment, By default RUS take 15 min to take effect, But we can change this according to our requirement (check your settings in RUS propert option)To check whether any problem between AD and exchange to stamp proxy address select option "update Now" and check after some time.c) It may not set it if the proxyAddresses attribute has been manually added. Ans : This mean to say that if we are creating new object and assigned email address manually and 'deselect' option "Update email address based on recipient policy"d) If still you are having issue to generate proxy address using RUS then please have a look of below URL as Amit said beforehttp://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2004/07/07/175444.aspxHope this will help you....Anil

Pancamo,If RUS is configured to "Always Run" thenlatency should be very short and itshould run every minute. In this case connect to the domain controller in your ADU&C which is configured into RUS and see if it is updated, there might be AD replication latency also.If you have given enough time to apply RUS but still have problem then increase the diagnostics logging to see the problem as per the link. Also make sure that the account you created falls under any recipient policy to apply proxy addresses, which usually falls under default recipient policyat lastbut just in case...As Anil said "It may not set it if theproxyAddressesattribute has been manually added" means the RUS checkbox is cleared then it doesn't set.proxyAddresses is an attribute of mail enabled object and has multi valued property, it is a set of all proxy addresses including primary & secondary smtp addresses, x400, x500 or any other foreign addresses like CC Mail, Lotus notes mail, SIP, if you have any faxing system then DID etc....You may like to read below article to understand how it works...Exchange Recipient Update Service and proxy addresseshttp://searchexchange.techtarget.com/news/article/0,289142,sid43_gci1119799,00.htmlAmit Tank | MVP - Exchange | MCITP:EMA MCSA:M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com
