Questions about a secondary mail server at a branch office
Hi all, We currently have a main office setup with the DC/Exchange server. A branch office in another state uses Outlook Anywhere to send/receive email. The problem is that the secondary office sends out large amounts of email a day (thousands, all legit, of course). I'm curious about offloading that kind of work to a server that is local for them, while being able to manage it all at our main office. I have familiarity with Exchange, but by no means am I an expert. If we setup another Windows server at the branch office with Exchange on it and then add them to our domain through a VPN, is that the best option? I'm trying to make this as simple as possible while being able to manage it all in one spot. I'm not sure what I want to do is called, so I don't really know what to search or ask for. At the very least, the branch office would need its own outgoing mail server that would somehow sync up with the main office, as to ease up on the bandwidth for our main office and to allow for future growth (I assume that once we get it setup for a single branch office, that doing it with more would follow the same setup and configuration). Thanks.

You've asked what I call a "consulting engagement question", a question so complicated or requiring so many follow-up data-collection questions from us that we can't possibly give you the depth of information the issue deserves. You really ought to hire a consultant to work this project through with you, and/or pick up Tony Redmond's and Jim McBee's books and start reading.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."
