Question regarding alias' / alternative addresses for a user.
Hi
We use exchange and outlook 2003.
Our business has lost some people through redundancy.
We have deleted the user accounts and mailboxes but still need external customers to be able to e-mail the old addresses if needed. (Forwarding the e-mail was an option that my manager didn't want to do).
I want to set up old e-mail addresses as alias' for employee's that are still here.
Ihave set up analternative smtp address so that when (for example) Iamnolongerhere@mybusiness.com is e-mailed it is sent to Iamstillhere@mubusiness.combut the e-mail does not get delivered.
I have set up an alternative address that was not the same as an old address and this works.
Is there a problem using an old address as an alias? if so is there a way round it?
(I realise that this may not make much sense am having trouble describing what I need to do).
If anyone can help it would be mos t appreciated.
Many thanks

Hi,
Have you changed the email address in the smtp addresses of original user account?
Email/smtp address should be unique in the organization so first you need tochange it to some temp email address and then give the original smtp address to new user.
Another way is, you can disable the original account to prevent other users from login and give Full Mailbox & Send As access to the new user who is handling the same task for the old user on old account.
In this way new user can access old users mailbox in his/her outlook by adding additional mailbox and while sending mail he/she can select the old users email address in From filed so receiver feels that it has sent by old user.

Hi,
Whether the old and new email address have the same email address followed @ and just different alias?
I noticed in your example, the email Iamnolongerhere@mybusiness.com and Iamstillhere@mubusiness.com have different domain name.
Please clarify this question.
Thanks

Essentially I am trying to set up an e-mail address for someone who has left the company as an alias for someone who is still here but the account for the person who has left has been deleted already.
The domain name difference on the original post was a typo.
Hope this clarifies what I am trying to do.
thanks for the responses so far.

Hi,
Thank you for your clearly description.
In fact, the alternative email address should be set as long as keep the different alias on the current user. I have tested on my lab, and can receive the email without any issue.
Did you configure alternative email on E-mail Addresses tab? If not process issue, I suspect the issue is the user was not deleted completely.
Thus, I suggest we run ASDI Edit tool to check whether the user still exists.
Regarding the ADSI Edit tool, please locate it in the installation file of Exchange, you can view the article as the reference.
