Question about Exchange Server 2010 Address Book Service not starting after reboot
I am trying to research what can cause the Exchange Address Book Service to not start or time out after a reboot. Some information for you Server: 2008R2 w/SP1; this is a VM. Exchange version: 14.02.0342.003 (this version number was taken from help>about in the EMC); This is part of a DAG, and is only a Client Access Server, no mailbox database are mounted to this box at any time. what tends to happen is that i will install updates on this box. (in this last iteration of updates, nothing exchange specific was applied.) After i reboot, the services run, but usually the Address book service does not start. in the logs, it gets the following: first, it will get (A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the Microsoft Exchange Address Book service to connect.) then it is followed by ( The Microsoft Exchange Address Book service failed to start due to the following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.) when i started the Address Book service manually the next day, it started with no issues. I have Symantec Endpoint protection client 12.1.2015.2015 install and DPM 2010 client 3.0.7696.0 installed as well. any suggestions of what to look at, logs, setting, changes of any sort, etc... would be appreciated. thanks Ian Ian

Hi Krayze, Exchange Services may fall to start without any obvious reason for example due to insufficient RAM available in a server. This is pretty common story with VMs especially, and you also run Symantec EP which also has it's own memory amount requirements plus to Microsoft Exchange 2010. Please review the Exchange 2010 Memory Configurations and compare it to what you have at your server. Vote if Helpful / Mark if Answer

Hi Ian, Is there any error message/event log when the service fail to start? Thanks. Fiona Liao TechNet Community Support

Fiona, there were onl;y two events listed in the logs, the event about the 30000 millisecond time out and that the service did not start in a timely fashion. these are the traditional events that are written to the event log. meaning, they are not anyhting new or undocumented. if you need any further informaiton, please ask. thank you for your reply, IanIan

Hi Ian, From the build string I see that you have SP2 installed. Do you have one of the recent RUs installed? Sp2 Ru4 or RU6 for example ? Do you have the Address Book Service and RPC Client access running on specific ports. Wondering if something may be trying to grab those ports when the service starts up - its unlikely but possible. I'd start the RU update and see what that does for you.
