Publisher 2010 will not format Multiple Copies per sheet correctly

I created a vertical business card, 3.5 inches high, 2.0 inches wide. I want to print them 10-up on Avery pre-scored business card forms.

In the print menu, I select the printer, letter size, landscape, multiple copies per sheet, and it first comes up with a default of 6. I go to layout options, set side margin to 0.5, top margin to 0.75, horizontal gap to 0 and vertical gap to 0. Going back to the print menu, no matter what number I put in the number of copies per sheet, only 6 panels show up in the preview (on the first page) and the remainder show up on the 2nd page. I can't find a way to shake the behavior. The same layout works perfectly in previous versions of Publisher. This problem is happening with any printer I pick, including Adobe PDF, HP, Konica-Minolta, Lexmark, and Brother. Itis also happening under Windows XP and Windows 7.

As I need 10 cards printed per sheet for the original vertical cards, please advise as to the correct settings to get this to work as it did in previous versions.

(Setting up a horizontal business card, 2.0 inches wide, 3.5 inches high, print portait, multiple copies=10, side margin=.75 top margin=.5, and horizontal and vertical gaps = 0, works correctly in Publisher 2010 and previous versions.)

Hi,

Thank you for using Office IT Pro General Discussions forum.

If the total size of the copies exceeds the page size, not all the copies will be shown in one sheet. So, set it as horizontal can print properly.

I am extremely well-versed in the operation of Publisher since the very first version, and would not have posted the problem if I were able to find any possible way around it except for retreating to Publisher 2007.

You are correct that if the total number of copies exceeds the page size, not all the copies will be shown.

The page IS set to horizontal. The page size of the cards is 2 inches wide, 3.5 inches high. When the number of copies is set to 6, then 6 copies of the card print on page 1 of the output, with lots of space to the right of the 6 copies. If I set the number to 7, then one copy of the card spills over to page 2. If I set it to 10, then 4 copies spill to page 2, 3 on the top row, 1 on the bottom.

All 10 should fit on page 1. The total height of 10 copies would be 7 inches and width would be 10 inches on a horizontal output, well within 8.5 x 11 inches.

THIS EXACT SAME DOCUMENT PRINTS 10 COPIES OF THE CARD CORRECTLY ON 1 PAGE IN ALL PREVIOUS VERSIONS OF PUBLISHER.

Try this:

In Publisher 2010:

1. Create a new file via File->New

2. Select the Template Selection "More Blank Page Sizes"

3. Select the Folder under "Publication Types" called "Business Cards"

4. Select "North American Size Vertical Card 2 x 3.5"

You will notice the example print preview shows 3 rows of 3. But we want to print on the prescored Avery cards which are 2 rows of 5. Proceed:

5. Put some text in the new document (so you can see something in the print preview)

6. Go to the Print menu, and select a printer. Select Multiple copies per sheet. The default of vertical with 9 panels will show as previously.

7. Select “Landscape”. 2 rows of 3 will show, with 6 as the default number of multiple per page.

8. Increase the number from 6 to 7, or 8, or 9, or 10. The extra cards show on page 2

But as mentioned, we want to print on the Avery paper, which is 2 rows of 5 with no space between them.

9. Go to the layout Options and fill in:

    Side Margin .5

    Top Margin .75

    Horizontal Gap 0

    Vertical Gap 0

The number of cards on page 1 remains at 6 with the overflow on page 2

10. Leave the number of multiple pages to 10

11. Save the document as a .pub file

In Publisher 2003 or 2007:

1. Open the same file

2. Do a "Print Preview". 2 columns of 5 cards appears.

Therefore, there is a problem with Publisher 2010. How do we get this fixed?

After following your steps I see the same problem in Publisher 2010 and Publisher 2007 Service Pack 2 but not in 2003 Service Pack 3. I see the 5 rows of 2 in 2003 as you are expecting in 2010 but not getting.

What type of Avery labels are you printing?

If you have the existing Publication open that was set to Northamerica 2 x 3.5" try changing the page size to the Avery preset by going to the Page Design tab, selecting Size, and clicking on More Preset Page Sizes..., selecting Business Cards, and either Avery A4/A5 or Avery US Letter.

or

If you are creating a new publication in 2010 but in step 4 choose the Avery preset.

Aaron-

You, sir, have succeeded where many others have failed. By setting the page size to an Avery 27871 and changing the orientation to portrait, the 10-up printing works as it should.

Trying to set up the page via the blank business cards still doesn't work. So the question is, what is the Avery template setting inside Publisher 2010 that the blank template isn't.

At least there's a workaround.

Many thanks.

Not sure why it's different than previous versions (it's the same for me in 2007) but if you set "North American Size Horizontal Card 3.5 x 2" in step 4 instead of ".... Vertical Card 2 x 3.5" that should work.

Just came across this same problem (creating business cards in portrait orientation and trying to print 10 cards per sheet on standard business card stock) and figured out a very easy work around. Simply group all objects in your design and rotate 90 degrees. Select orientation tab and select landscape as your page orientation. Now select page size tab and choose More Preset Page Sizes. Under select a Page Size, choose Business Cards. Under Standard Business Cards choose North American 3.5 x 2". Under Manufacturers choose Avery US Letter. On next page under Select a Page Size, choose 27871 Business Card 3.5 x 2" (this is the first selection on this page).

You will now be able to print 2 columns of 5 cards on standard perforated busines card stock. Just printed 250 cards this way and worked like a champ!

 Hope this helps.

Thank you very much for this solution... I was pulling my hair out before trying your fix.

I was able to print 10 business cards per sheet on standard business card stock, just as you said.
