Public Folder clean-up
Hello, We are using Exchange 2010 SP2 and having Public Folders in it. I need to clean-up the Public Folder as I have deleted some old items from it. When I see the size of Public Folder database on Exchange server, it shows 75GB. When I right click Public Folders in Outlook and see the Folder size it shows 31GB. When I run the command "Get-Publicfolderdatabase -status | ft Name,DatabaseSize,AvailableNewMailboxSpace", I see the available size as 1.1GB. I need to know why there is different in the details. How do I reduce the size to 31GB as shown in Outlook details. Thanks

You need to perform a offline defrag to reduce the physical size.Sukh

I tried that Offline defragmentation. But it free up only 2GB space.

Hi The only way do shrink the database is to run an Offline Defrag, but it not worth doing it until you see the available free space (AvailableNewMailboxSpace) size have the amount of GBs you expect. If you still have the default value for DeletedItemRetention set to 14, the deleted folders/items is still in the dumpster so you need to wait or set the value to something lower to speed things up. I have changed this value to 1. I have dismounted the database and mounted it back again after making the change. Do I need to do something else to make this effective immediately.

When did you delete the folders/items....yesterday? Either you wait or change the maintenance schedule on the database. Note: All Exchange Store-focused online database maintenance functions such as recovery item cleanup are the same in Exchange 2010 as they are in Exchange 2007. Only ESE functions, online defragmentation, and database checksumming have changed. See the section: Database Maintenance http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb125040.aspxMartina Miskovic

After making the DeletedItemRetention to 1 and waiting for 1 day, now I can see the Available Mail box space as 40GB when I run the command Get-Publicfolderdatabase -status | ft Name,DatabaseSize,AvailableNewMailboxSpace
