Public Folder Permission Inconsistencies ...
Hello, Im having some issues with public folder permissions. Or so i think... I have a few users that can access the public folders and some that can't. I set the PF permissions on the server via the PS script and it ran well without error. I look at the public folder on my machine and everything looks perfect as i set them, when i right click, properties, and check permissions. Now, another user says he's still getting permission denied errors on his laptop when he goes to the public folders. Long story short, i trouble shot his machine, with the exception of uninstalling MS office2007, i did just about everything. I decided to try a different machine. On the other machine (not joined to the domain yet) i installed office 2007 (same as the problematic clients) and setup the same user on this new machine....when he tries the public folders this time, he is able to access them!! The weird thing is, if we right click the folder and check the permissions, the permissions are not showing up correctly here either...they show up the same way they do on his original machine. - Im the domain admin/exchange admin etc - He and others are domain users - I see all the correct permissions and can access everything accordingly - They see the wrong permissions, and some CAN access the files within the folders, and MOST cant - The test subject, after having it work on the new machine, we were still unable to get it working on his old machine. I havent tried uninstalling the suite yet, but im saving this option for last as there are 60 other users with this issue!! Any suggestions would be great...Thank you Edit: Other things about the environment - All users are in the same OU even Admins - Exchange server 2007 - Windows 7 clients with office 2007

Any outlook suggestions before i uninstall/re-install!?

Hello, Since he is able to view public folder via OWA, this may not a Server side issue. I suggest you change to Outlook online mode (on Outlook side), then check this issue will occur or not. From your description, I think this is because Outlook have not updated from Server side, when you use online mode or manually to update from server side, it will be OK. Thanks, EvanEvan Liu TechNet Community Support

I tried removing cached exchange mode already to no avail. Steps taken are as follows: 1. Removed cached exchange mode, shutdown outlook, open run box: outlook.exe /cleanfreebusy. 2. Shutdown outlook, remove the user profile, removed the ost from user profile in windows, started a new mailbox for user. Anything else you can think of?

Have you tried creating a new Outlook Profile for this user, or to the extreme, a new windows profile since this seems to be machine specific.

Yes Russ, I have done both already and neither seem to fix the issue on his machine. Of course, if move to a different machine all together then the problem goes away for him. So i need to figure out if there is a switch or something i could run on outlook... or if there is another way to push updates from the server to outlook clients... The main thing is, I'd like to actually solve this problem instead of un-install/re-install the software for each user. It looks like this might end up being the only option but i dont like it. It's like the IT idiots that never troubleshoot and all they do is re-image the machine to start from scratch and load the personal data back on again. You dont learn or increase technical skill this way. Id rather search through thousands of lines of log files first before i throw in the towel

Well, it's not really throwing in the towel, it's balancing the hours to troubleshoot vs. a viable workaround. If reinstallation works to resolve the issue, and that takes 30 min per machine, and the troubleshooting has already had 20 man hours invested in it, then we are wasting productivity chasing something down, from a business perspective. Now, that does not mean giving up looking for the answer, I would continue to look for the answer and have the desktop techs re-install Office to get the customers/end users happy again, and if I found THE answer to the problem, then that gets implemented instead of re-installation, and that works. Anyway, with that being said, have you used the Outlook Connection Status to see if the client is even connecting to the PF server? In case you didn't know, hold ctrl and right click on the Outlook icon in the systray. Then click on connection status, you should see a line that is for public folders and it shows the connected server and the status of the connection.

Yeah Russ, I see your point in the balance of hours spent vs the quick solution, which is what i think this will just have to boil down to for now. I checked the connection status but it doesn't specifically show anything for the PF. I see 4 connections total, 2 to my AD server and 2 to the Exchange server. It doesn't really say what for though except mail or directory

Well, you should see one for Public Folders. In EMC, run Get-MailboxDatabase <DBTheUserIsOn> | fl PublicFolderDatabase,ExchangeVersion and let us know the results. Is that the correct server were the public folders are? Also, I know you have tried creating a new profile, but have you created a new profile that was not cached from the start? What SP is Office 2007 on?

Hello, From your description, I think this user works well in OWA and other machines, right? If so, this just a client issue, the public folder database is set well on the server side. To troubleshoot this issue, I suggest you create one new Windows profile, configure the problem user (in Outlook) to have a try. Thanks, EvanEvan Liu TechNet Community Support

Hi Evan, thanks for the replies. I know that what you're suggesting works...Im just trying to find solutions that doesn't involve blowing out 60+ users profiles. Russ, I ran the EMC command and everything is turning up fine on the server...displayed the database that the PF is on and it is correct, along with the version of exchange. Office 2007 is on SP3. Looks like it's inevitable that ill be blowing out profiles to fix this issue.... At either rate, thank you guys for chiming in on this subject.

Just out of curiosity, what was the connection type when you looked at Outlook Connection Status? TCPIP or HTTPS?

Do you have another database on another server to move this mailbox to? I did come across another person having a similar issue and their fix/workaround was to move the mailbox.

If this issue not occur on other machines and OWA, this may not issue on the server side. I think you need to troubleshoot from client side. Thanks, EvanEvan Liu TechNet Community Support

Sorry guys, I should've marked this as solved. I figured out it is a client issue, for some reason there is a corruption with the image that these clients machines were created from. Once you remove the suite and re-install it again, all is kosher. Thanks for your posts
