Proxy & redirection from 2007sp3 to 2010sp1
Hi, There is pleanty instructions how 2010 CAS works in terms of proxy & redirection but I struggle to find instructions for my scenario: 2007sp3 CAS OWA settings [internet facing] SITE A Internal URL: https://webmail.damain.com/owa External URL: https://webmail.damain.com/owa 2010sp1 CAS OWA settings [non internet facing] SITE B Internal URL: https://2010sp1-cas-server-name.damain.local/owa External URL: A mailbox is in SITE B on 2010sp1 MB role server. Getting following error when trying access an Exchange 2010 mailbox using https://webmail.damain.com/owa address: Outlook Web Access is currently unavailable. If the problem continues, contact technical support for your organization and tell them the following: No Client Access servers of the appropriate version can be accessed from the Internet. How should I configure this scenario to proxy or redirect from 2007sp3[internet facing] to 2010sp1[non internet facing]? [This is just a temporary setup before I get a new/legacy URL and certificates sorted.] Many thanks, Pawel

The internet-facing CAS server needs to be Exchange 2010 (SP1 or even SP2 now). You have a E2K7SP3 CAS trying to proxy or redirect to a E2K10SP1 CAS. This will not work. E2K10 CAS can proxy/redirect to a E2K7SP2/SP3 CAS but the opposite is not true. This is an example of why you have to upgrade Internet-facing servers first, then non-Internet facing servers. Only solution I can see is "upgrade" the E2K7SP3 to E2K10(SP1/2). Upgrade = you'll have to do a clean install on another machine (there is no in-place upgrade). Note that if you still have E2K7 MBX servers (do you?), you will need to retain a E2K7 CAS.

Thanks for our reply. I was suspecting that is the case. Just want to be sure. Yes, there is plenty transition/upgrade manuals saying that you have to upgrade an internet facing site first but none of them [I saw] says why. Have you found even one post/article/doc which says that you have to upgrade/transition internet facing site first BECAUSE proxy/redirect from 2007sp2+ to 2010sp1 doesn't work? Reason I'm asking is just curiosity. Also maybe I'm missing good Exchange info source. Yes, we still have all the mailboxes on 2007sp3. I've have just installed our new 2010sp1 roles in our new data centre. 2007sp3 is in the data centre which will be decommissioned soon so I will have to "move internet facing site" to 2010 CAS site anyway. Cheers, Pawel

Before responding I did quite a bit of searching on-line and to be honest, did not find anything that stated this openly. I hope, for you, that I'm wrong and that maybe some MVP here with lots more design experience than me could come up with a better solution. You can google (or bing...) on the subject of exchange 2010 proxy redirect. I found this, among many other resources (in this case about OWA specifically): http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2009/12/02/upgrading-outlook-web-app-to-exchange-2010.aspx Read this and some others very quickly and could find nothing suggesting that the Internet-facing server could be E2K7. Would be nice but I suspect that it is simply not possible, given all the references to upgrading those servers to E2K10 first.
