I am trying to enable protected view mode for outlook attachments only but I find that it is not possible.

We have a document management system and complicated macro templates and other addons which are not digitally signed so I have to enable all macros.

To prevent malicious macros from running from outlook attachments i wanted to enable the protected view mode and set up trusted locations for all the temp folders that the DMS and word use for opening word documents from our DMS.

I got it too work perfectly where outlook attachments will always open in protected view mode and documents opening from the dms do not open in proteted view mode due to the trusted locations.

However the problem is that documents opened from the trusted locations will not save. Even when closing the document and saving it comes up with the error message about saving the document.

I have added the network location where the DMS documents are saved to the trusted locations and enabled trusted locations on the network.

Why is there no option to only enable protected view for opening documents? It allows me to disable protected view on opening and have save only. But not the other way around. Surely having documents open in protected view but allowing them to save should be an option?

Why is that protected view is still enabled for saving when all the locations where it might save are added to the trusted locations.

Why is it that protected view is enabled for all documents that are opened even though I only have protected mode enabled for outlook attachments.

On the file block settings, if i disable file block for word 2007 documents (the top one) then the protected mode for outlook documents stops working for those file types as well. Surely this is not working correctly? If i have only protected mode enabled for outlook attachments, any other attachments that are opened should not be in protected mode. The issue might be because the DMS is intergrated in to outlook so any documents opened from the DMS are opened from within outlook, although they are not outlook attachments.

The odd thing is opening documents from the DMS does NOT load the protected view banner like opening outlook attachments does, so in principle it doesn't appear to be loading the DMS documents in protected view, even though saving is disabled. Which makes me think its some kind of bug or issue.

Any help would be appreciated.

This is the error message that i get when closing documents without saving and when saving documents that are opened from the DMS.

The dms is autonomy worksite 8.5. It has a UNC path for document store and two local temp folders that are used as a local document temp cache. They are all added as trusted locations.

TL;dr

Want to enable protected view mode only for outlook attachments, I don't want protected view mode for documents open either locally or from the worksite DMS.
