Pros and Cons of Charting Excel with External Connection to SQL Server

Hi,

I'm redesigning a Excel workbook I have which does Pivot Charts from an SQL Server data source and looking for advice on the best methods (pros and cons). This is for Excel 2013 and SQLServer 2014.

Some of the things I have considered are;

1. Create a Pivot Chart directly from a server table

2. Create a table directly from a server table and then Pivot chart these inside Excel

3. Create a Cross Tab View in SQL and connect to this and chart directly in Excel

4. Power Pivot or Power View. I don't have any experience with these yet.

The kind of discussion of interest around the above is.

- What is the most efficient from a file size perspective?

- Can I make 1 connection and have serveral charts doing different things run off it?

- Anything else of interest

Thanks in advance

Hi bassmann2,

This forum is for developers discussing developing issue like Excel automation and customization.

Since the issue is more relative to the end-user, I would like to move it to Excel IT Pro forum.

The reason why we recommend posting appropriately is you will get the most qualified pool of respondents, and other partners who read the forums regularly can either share their knowledge or learn from your interaction with us.

Thanks for your understanding.
