Procedure for upgrading Exchange 2007 Standard to Enterprise?
According to Microsoft, upgrading from Std toEnterprise is as simple as entering a new product code. Is that it? We need the 50 database/mail store functionality instead of the 5 we currently have. Our consultant quoted an hour of work to do this, which includes "some reconfiguration." However, we're unclear what else would need to be done. We will move the mailboxes on our own time, so we don't know what else needs to be done. Is this something we can simply do on our own? Also, does anyone know why I'm NOT seeing the option to enter a new license key as per MS instructions? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/556026/en-us?sp&sDo I need to stop all Exchange services? Finally, are there any prep steps that need to be taken? We were told since it's simply a license code, nothing is affected and we don't need to do any sort of full backup. Thanks!!

Hello, Yes, you just need to update the license key for enterprise edition to convert from standard edition. However it is possible in 64bit edition of Exchange 2007 only, if you are using 32bit edition of Exchange is not supported in production environment and you can not enter the license key. Find "Evaluations and Product Keys" Session in below article for further detail.Exchange Server 2007: Platforms, Editions, and Versionshttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb232170.aspx If you are using 64bit edition of Exchange 2007 then you can follow either of procedure mentioned in below article & yes it requires to restart Exchange Services. How to Enter the Product Keyhttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997621.aspx About your mailbox movement, can you give more detail about your Exchange environemnt & design and your plan? We are running a single 64-bit server, with roughly 200 mailboxes. Right now, we have them split among 4 mail stores and the fifth is dedicated to Public Folders. Each mail store is roughly 100GB in size right now, which is dangerous. They would take days to rebuild if any of them became corrupt. We'd like to take advantage of the 50 database limit in the Enterprise version and have our mail stores become much smaller. Our Exchange server is attached via iSCSI RAID, which hosts all the mail databases.

Well, which edition it shows when you go to Server Configuration -> Server Name -> Properties? If it shows standard then you can enter the product key by selecting "Enter Product Key" in action pane but if you can not find it then use Set-ExchangeServer command to set product key and restart the Exchange Information Store service.http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997621.aspxAmit Tank || MVP - Exchange || MCITP - Exchange 2007 || http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

OK, so I successfully applied the license today with no issues. However, it's STILL saying I can't have more than 5 databases in the First Storage Group. I thought the max was now 50, not 5?? That's the reason we upgraded in the first place! help!

Hi,Can you run Get-ExchangeServer "ServerName" | FL and verify which edition it shows? Additionally did you restart Exchange Services? If it doesn't work then try restarting server and verify the things.Amit Tank | MVP - Exchange | MCITP:EMA MCSA:M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

It shows Enterprise and we did reboot afterwards.Or is there still a limit of 5 databases per storage group and I just have to now create a second storage group? Would that present any problems?

Ah, I found my answer. Each storage group can have up to 5 databases.

Ahhhha, not in Enterprise edition :)http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/evaluation/editions.mspxHowever it is recommended to keep only one database in a storage group for faster recovery due to the fact that transcation logs are common for all DBs in a SG and second thing is to enable LCR/SCR you need to have only one DB in SG. You can use database portability feature to move mailbox database to another storage group incase.http://exchangeshare.wordpress.com/2008/05/21/exchange-2007-database-portability/http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb123954(EXCHG.80).aspxAmit Tank | MVP - Exchange | MCITP:EMA MCSA:M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com
