Problems with a mailbox larger than 6GB - user exceeds mailbox limits even if they are set to 200 GB
We just started to test MS Exchange 2010 on the Windows Server 2008R2 cca 4 weeks ago. Previously we have had a server with Ex2007 but it collapsed so I did not have a chance to migrate the servers properly. So I just exported the .pst files from each offline .ost, created the whole new instalation of the new server and moved the mails manualy in the newly created mailboxes. We have 5 mailboxes. 4 of them were moved properly and they are working well. However the last one was imported just partialy and after few days it started to say that the user has exceeded its mailbox limit. The origianl .pst file had 6GB which is a lot but was working without any problems on the Exchange 2007. Now when importing the old pst file items in the new mailbox it apparently did not imported all of them and stops importing them when it reaches cca 2GB. I know that this is normaly controled by the limits set up on the general mailbox database or the mailbox itself. When I was installing the server i left them on default setting as I thought that this means that there are no limits set and the mailbox can reach its maximum system limits which are 16 GB if I remember it well. After the first problem I thought that maybe the default size is the 2GB size so I set the limit manualy for the max 2000GB :-). However it seems it did not help. We are using the Outlook 2010 version where it tells you in the mailbox cleanup how far the limit of your mailbox is used and it says 1906 GB free of 1907 GB and still when it reaches the size of 2GB it starts to say that the user exceeds the limit of the mailbox. I went several times through all setings, the mailbox itself is set to use the default setting. I found this link http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvradmin/thread/ceb22a06-628f-48f5-8ea3-061bc1634c3a, which when I use i get this response: Name : main_mailbox IssueWarningQuota : 1.863 TB (2,048,000,000,000 bytes) ProhibitSendQuota : 1.863 TB (2,048,000,000,000 bytes) ProhibitSendReceiveQuota : 1.863 TB (2,048,000,000,000 bytes) Which if I understand it well confirms that the mailbox should not say anything, but it still does :-( Any help or any idea what am i missing? Thanks, Vilem

Hi, Limits doesnt immediately apply on mailboxes due to some cache values for Info Store service on MBX serve. Did you check it after some hours? Also try to restart the Info Store service on MBX server where this mbx exists. Regards,Laeeq Qazi|Team Lead(Exchange + Sharepoint + BES + DynamicsCRM) www.HostingController.com

Hi, yes I know that. I tried to restart the service several times, even waited untill the second day. The problem is that the server says that the limits have been increased - as I showed in the original message, but still the senders get the message that the user exceedes the mailbox limits. That 2GB ceiling seems to indicate the user isn't set for unicode.

Which means? How do I check whether this is the issue and is there a solution how to change that? Thanks.

It's set in Outlook when you set up the account. Got to Tools|Options|Mail Setup|Data Files|Advanced. See if it says Outlook is running in Unicode mode at the bottom of the Advanced pane.

Well I do have Outlook 2010 which is a bit different but in the Account settings|Datafiles|Advanced it says "Outlook is running in Unicode mode against the MS Exchange." So that seams that this is not the problem. V

OK. Couple of questions:1. What did you use to do the import?2. Have you tried moving the mailbox to another store, and telling it to skip corrupted items?

1. I used normal export/ import from another .pst file. I mean File/Open/Import/ImportFromAnotherFile/OutlookDataFile. 2. No I have not tried that.

I meant, what program did you use? If it was Outlook, was it the same version that created the .pst, and was it set for Unicode when it did the import?

OK, sorry. The file was created in Outlook 2010 (beta) and the import was done also in the Outlook 2010. As for the Unicode setting there is no choise that allows you to set Unicode for the import. If I am not wrong that is because the new pst files are set automaticaly for unicode. At least I dont know about any settings that allows to change this.

OK. I thought the 2GB ceiling might be significant, but it might just be coincidence.

Well yes, but the truth is that it seem to me also that it really uses the 2GB ceiling. I can try to create a brand new mailbox and move the mails there more carefully to see what happens. Will try that and report what happened. V
