Problem with Office Word 2010 Print Settings not saving

Office Pro Plus 2010 on XP2 x86

I've installed it on a couple of test systems to test our custom macros and vsto ribbons. They all seem to work OK, except for one thing. The new File>Print screen - it does not remember it's settings. For example, in Word, go to the File>Print screen:

Change Collated to Uncollated and Print.
Exit Word and go back into Word.
Uncollated has changed back to Collated.

Now try the old style print dialogue (in Word 2010):
(Create a macro and run it)
Sub OldPrintDialog()
Dialogs(wdDialogFilePrint).Show
End Sub

Tick\Untick Collate and print.
Exit Word and go back in.
Look at the old Print Dialogue and it has remembered it's setting.

It looks like MS have forgotten to put code in that controls this. It works OK in Word 2000\2002\2003\2007... and will to be a problem for some of our computers when doing scripted printing, e.g. two copies of a 3 page invoice prints from the wrong trays! It should print 1\1, 2\2, 3\3, but prints 1\2\3, 1\2\3.

And I've tried several different drivers and printers - they all behave the same...

I need to set the collate option permanently to "Uncollated".

Where is this setting stored, or is it a bug?

Thanks

G

EDIT (20110303 16:18): Just took Office 2010 off the invoicing test system and put Office 2003 on - and our invoices print correctly!

Hi,

To specify the settings, follow these steps :

1.       Start Word and open the document you want to change.

2.       Click the Paper tab, you can do that according to the version of MS Office that you are using.

3.       Under Paper, click the paper size you want.

4.       If you want to change the page orientation of the document or its page margins, click the Margins tab.

5.       Select the desired options.

6.       To use the paper size specified in step 4 for only the active section of the document, click Selected text.

7.       Click OK.

Sincerely,

Harry

No !!!!

It does not work (Orientation, margins, etc. are saved), but not collation.

"Change Collated to Uncollated and Print.
Exit Word and go back into Word.
Uncollated has changed back to Collated."

Is there a fix or workaround for this bug?

Most printer settings are not saved with the document. I believe the best you can do is set the option as the default for your printer (in Control Panel).

The collate option is not checked on any of my A4 printers.  However, Word, Excel, Powerpoint always open with the collate option on.  Incidentally, Outlook always defaults to not collated.

The HP4600 & HP4650 will stop & print an error sheet if more than one copy & collation are selected.

Is the collate option hard coded in Office 2010?

I just checked, and, on my system, the "collate" option selected in Outlook as well as Windows Live Mail and other applications. I have always assumed this was set in the printer options, but maybe not. As you suggested, it might be the default of some (Microsoft?) applications.

Having recently migrated to Office 2010 we have come across exactly the same problem described by Graham Ferrer i.e. not being able to store collation settings for specific documents, so I was pleased to find this thread.  However, it appears to me that there are no permanent answers to the original question posed by Graham way back in March 2011.  Any chance of an update?

There is a solution:

I think it relates to:

"Mopier Mode" on the Device settings tab of the printer properties.

Set to "Disabled"

Hello Thank you but the Mopier setting is enabled and grayed out.  How do I change it....

This is absolutely ridiculous. There is absolutely NO valid reason why WORD cannot save ALL print options with the document. It is utterly user unfriendly to force users to change print options each time they print the SAME document.

And I know this used to work with previous version of Office/Word. I can't remember when it broke but it needs to be fixed.

And from what I've seen, NOTHING in the ADVANCED tab is saved....PERIOD!

MS, please fix this obvious BUG.

Hi Stefan,

I would add a couple of other points. I know you will probably say that printer options are dependent on the type of printer because each one may have different options. To which I would say the following:

It seems Word should be able to retrieve these printer specific settings from the print driver or printer and store those preferences with the document when you make changes from within the document. At that point it should be able to determine what properties are applicable to that particular printer.

I would submit that WORD already does this with a couple of settings. For example: right on the print dialog (without having to click on Printer Properties) where you have the option of printing on one side or both, etc.

That already follows the ACTUAL print properties which is defined as default via the Control Panel. If I change this in Control Panel then the change is reflected in the WORD document.

So clearly WORD has to be sending a query to find out what the current setting is. Why can't it retrieve all applicable settings and then if the user changes any of them from within the document, Word can store that information for the last selected printer.

I realize this is not the easiest thing to program (I am a software engineer myself) but I think it is possible and it certainly is a common expectation among the user community who don't desire to have to change each and every time they print the same document.

Just my thoughts on the matter. :)

Thanks

Allen

For us lay people out there, what can be done to save printer settings so each time Word is opened, it prints with those settings?

My problem is that i want it to print from last page to first. I have gone into printer properties and saved a new "commonly used settings" with "print from last page" checked. I have also checked the "always print with current settings". Once i hit OK, it only prints that way for that document. Each time i want to print a Word document, i have to go and change the properties again.

You can change the default settings in the printer driver (go to Devices and Printers in Control Panel), if that helps.

Hi Stefan,

The whole point of what people are asking for is to have these settings changed PER DOCUMENT and have it saved with the document.

Most people don't want ALL of their documents printed with exactly the same settings.

Well, Betme_E's post (to which I replied) was about changing the defaults, I believe.

Note that saving printer options with the document has NEVER been possible in Word. If I remember correctly, it is possible in Excel (which obviously doesn't help).

I agree Allen.   I've never received any replies from a Microsoft MVP that actually answered my questions.   These Microsoft Forums have proved to be a colossal failure in providing customer support.

Like you I'd like Microsoft to fix MSword-2010 to save ALL Printer settings with documents.  I go back and forth between printing regular 8.5x11 sheets of paper and 4x6" Index Cards in my HP printers Photo Tray.   Each and every time I open up Word to print an Index Card, I have to go to the File/Print page and reset the Printer Page Per Sheet setting from "1 Page Per Sheet" to "1 Page Per Sheet, Scaled to 4 x 6 for Borderless 4x6 Index Cards".    If Microsoft would only fix this bug, or at least make saving printer settings a user selectable option, it would eliminate the frustration I get every time I have to print an Index Card.

And a word to Microsoft.   Each time I receive an email with an offer to upgrade to a new version of Office or Word, I say to myself, "Not until you fix the printer settings problem in the version I already own".

Since Word has never been designed to store printer settings, what you are asking for is not a "fix"; it's a request for a new feature. What you can do is submit suggestions for Office in the form at https://support2.microsoft.com/common/survey.aspx?scid=sw;en-us;2222&altStyle=MFE&renderOption=OverrideDefault&showpage=1&fr=1&nofrbrand=1.

Also, note that this isn't Microsoft support. Most posters are volunt
