Problem with Office 2010 Activation (Activation Error)

When I try to activate Office 2010 Professional Plus x64 on Windows 7 x64 RTM, The activation fails. I was able to retrieve some entries from the event log which may point to the problem (pasted below). I downloaded the beta twice, and used two different keys in the hope that the initial key was corrupt. This was not the problem. Office seems to be working correctly, but the title bar is red, and has a comment "(Product Activation Failed)". I have tried activating using Word and Excel, and both exhibit the same problem, the activation code is accepted, but the product does not activate.

Can you try activating (setting the key) through control panel / uninstall a program / right-click Office 2010 / choose "Change" (not uninstall). From the setup dialog that comes up (may take a minute) you are supposed to be able to enter a key (I cannot myself; possibly because mine was installed with an MSP and is set to use an Office KMS). But I have been told that you can do this.

Thanks Jerry -- Apparently, using the installer to set the activation key did the trick. Office had to re-install itself, which took a while... and required a reboot. When it came back, I ran Excel, but Excel was reported as unactivated... but offered to complete the activation. The activation completed, but excel still had a red-bar. Re-running excel and the warning was finally fixed!

I was having the same issue and this did the trick for me.
Thanks, Jerry.

I'm having the same "Product Activation Failed" problem on my installation of Office 2010 Pro.  I tried your suggestion of changing my MAK key through the control panel, change option, but every time I try it, the "Please wait while setup prepares the necessary files" dialog box comes on for a few seconds, then disappears, then nothing happens (even when I have the Office 2010 install disk in my DVD drive).

This is also after trying to change the MAK key inside Word's help menu and through the command prompt using various "ccscript ospp.vbs" commands.  Is there anything else you can suggest?  Thanks in advance.

ZenAgain I also have this problem. I'm just not able to input a key. --> Control panel, change option, but every time I try it, the "Please wait while setup prepares the necessary files" dialog box comes on for a few seconds, then disappears, then nothing happens (even when I have the Office 2010 install disk in my DVD drive).

The error that I can get fron the logs is:

Hi Jonno,

can you try a Control Panel ->Programs and Features->Office->Change->Repair ?

it seems that your Office installation is damaged.

Hi there Don,

If I try a Control Panel ->Programs and Features->Office->Change->Repair
Notting appears happens, however if I then check the Application log files I get the following;

Jonno,

the English edition includes "companion" proofing languages (Spanish and French) - it looks like these are damaged.
I suggest a complete uninstall of Office - any and all versions you may have currently installed.
You may need to use the guidance in this article to remove the damaged components:

I got this same error and this answer fixed it.  I am using Win7 with Office 2010.  I entered my Key and chose the "Standard" installation rather than "Custom" and it worked fine.  But I had to restart my laptop twice in order to get everything back to normal.  I did not lose any Outlook email or contacts etc.  many THANKS!

After having crashed my computer, I had to reinstall OFFICE 2010 prof.
After the test period I kept receiving the message to autenticate.
I tried with the correct MAK key, but kept receiving the error 2503.
I uninstalled, installed office 2010, without prevail.
Having called the helpdesk on 14/1/2013, which confirmed the exact MAK key, I was transferred to technical support.
Tom was unable to help me and told me that I had to return to my company, where I retired or pay a Microsoft engeneer 299,- to come and fix the problem.
Having looked on the internet, I found a Jerry Ham who gave a simple fix:
Goto settings, Programs,
 right click the mouse,
 choose the option change product key, reintroduce the product key
 and let Microsoft reconfigure the Office 2010

Everything is solved!!!! Thanks Jerry, you saved me 299,-
