Problem with DNS Server
Hello all, I am new to this site. I am not too familiar with DNS inegration and i have some problems with it..I have a Windows SBS 2003 as a Domain Controller (DNS and DHCP runs on it)Everything was working fine until two weeks ago but now its another story. No upgrades were made on the server, and no other installation..If i do not manually Specify a preferred dns server (the ip adress of my domain controller/DNS/DHCOP server) on every clients network connection properties (TCP/IP), they wont be able to go on the internet...I restarted the DNS Server service many times, i reloaded it, and I still have the same problem. Even after reboots..I have this error messae in the event viewer.DNS server has updated its own host (A) records. In order to ensure that its DS-integrated peer DNS servers are able to replicate with this server, an attempt was made to update them with the new records through dynamic update. An error was encountered during this update, the record data is the error code. If this DNS server does not have any DS-integrated peers, then this error should be ignored. If this DNS server's Active Directory replication partners do not have the correct IP address(es) for this server, they will be unable to replicate with it. To ensure proper replication: 1) Find this server's Active Directory replication partners that run the DNS server. 2) Open DnsManager and connect in turn to each of the replication partners. 3) On each server, check the host (A record) registration for THIS server. 4) Delete any A records that do NOT correspond to IP addresses of this server. 5) If there are no A records for this server, add at least one A record corresponding to an address on this server, that the replication partner can contact. (In other words, if there multiple IP addresses for this DNS server, add at least one that is on the same network as the Active Directory DNS server you are updating.) 6) Note, that is not necessary to update EVERY replication partner. It is only necessary that the records are fixed up on enough replication partners so that every server that replicates with this server will receive (through replication) the new data.Any of you ever had a similar problem??Regards, and thanks for your time.

Hi, You say if you not specify a preferred dns server this can mean that the DHCP scope options do not contain the DNS server so it is automaticly fill in. Please check the following: - open the DHCP mmc - expand the server - expand the scope - expand/select scope options - check if a dns server is specified if none specify the correct DNS server About the error in the event log, it says if no other DS-integrated peers are there the error can be safely ignored. As you are running SBS I assume this is the only DNS server in your company so you could ignore the error. If you have an other DNS server check the config. Regards, Johan blog: www.johanveldhuis.nl

So if you manually renew the clients ip address from command prompt, ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew does the client get the correct TCP/IP settings?

Dear customer: Thanks for Johan Veldhuiss reply. You can try his suggestion to fix the issue. In order to better troubleshoot the issue, please collect the following information: 1. How many domain controllers do you have in your domain? 2. Did you install DNS service on every domain controller? If you only have one DC and one DNS server, you can safely ignore the DNS error. Hope it helps. Rock Wang - MSFT

" If i do not manually Specify a preferred dns server (the ip adress of my domain controller/DNS/DHCOP server) on every clients network connection properties (TCP/IP), they wont be able to go on the internet... " What i think at his point that you must mention or configure the DNS as a Forwader, and mention you ISP DNS servers. Did you run the DNS test? In worst case remove/un-install the DNS and re-install it. hope this may help you. SBS setup is so easy. Ideally you are supposed to post this in Windows Server Forum
