Preventing EMC from adding number to duplicate addresses.
Exchange 2010 sp1 When I create a mailbox and there is another mailbox with the same email address it will create teh new address with a number at the end of the alias. For example I have a contact with bob@domain.com and I then later create a mailbox with for bob@domain.com it is created the address as bob2@domain.com I don't what the EMC to just make the account with the number at the end of a duplicate address, I want an error that prevents the mailbox from being created. Is that possible?

Not that I am aware of. The email address is only put on to the account after the account has been created. No checking is done before then other than checking for the AD account duplication. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.

Really!? So if you create a new mailbox or contact that has a duplicate address no errors are thrown but it just makes up an address?

Why is that seen as extraordinary? The only thing that Exchange is looking for is the duplicated AD account. If your policy means you get a conflict, then it puts the 2 on the end - there isn't much else it can do. Checking for a duplicated AD account is easy, but to check for a duplicated email address would be a lot more intensive. That is how it works, if you don't like it, complain to Microsoft and it might go in to the next version of Exchange. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.
