Powerpoint 2010 hangs then crashes anytime I click on the animations tab.

Any time I select the "Animations" tab or click inside the animation pane, the whole program freezes and must be shut down (losing all unsaved progress, of course).  Very rarely, I am able to change an animation setting or two before this happens, so I am basically creating my presentation one change at a time between crashes.  I will set an animation, quickly save the file, then watch the program freeze within about five seconds.  This only occurs when animation settings are being changed.  I can work with my slides for hours without a problem, but as soon as I do something involving animations... bingo.

I can make this problem occur even with the default blank slide show (1 slide, no content). So it has nothing to do with any existing content in the slide show.

Some unsuccessful things I have tried, based on other people's suggestions:
--Repairing the Office installation
--Disabling all add-ins
--Disabling video hardware acceleration
--Disabling all macros

My system info:
ASUS Z8PE-D12X w/ dual Xeon E5520
20GB RDIMMs
Server 2008R2 64-bit
Office 2010 Professional 64-bit SP2 (ver. 14.0.7015.1000)
No printers installed (default printer is Adobe PDF)

Hi,

First thing to do is open Powerpoint in safe mode(press CTRL key while the program is starting) to check the result.

According to your description, this issue can occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:

1. This issue can occur if you have not installed the latest updates.

2. PowerPoint may be in use by another process.

3. Antivirus software may be outdated, or conflicting with PowerPoint.

Follow the provided methods in this article to check the result:

Hope this helps.

Please also try to install the latest version of display adapter to check the result. Thanks.

1. All updates are installed.

2.  Powerpoint is not in use by any other process.  In fact, this machine normally operates with a minimal set of processes unless needed for special purposes.

3. There is no antivirus software, other than Microsoft Defender.  The best antivirus "app" is called operator self-control.

4. The most current display adapter driver is installed.

5. I have performed all of the checks recommended in the support link above, with the exception of the selective startup.  Restarting this machine is a chore because it requires detaching multiple external storage devices that are not recognized at startup.  I have to mount/map every drive except for the main RAID array manually after startup.  I would like to avoid this when possible.
