PST-File is corrupted

After installing office 2010 on a pc with previous office 2007 we had some problems with outlook freezing in inbox.
The user killed the outlook process by taskmanager...
Outlook freezed while trying to start so we tried the scanpst.exe.
But this tiny tool just told us, the file has errors but it could not be fixed.

By using the new PSTVIEWER. exe from Microsoft we saw that the pst file is truncated.
It has the size of 300 mb and has to have the size of 900 mb.
The PSTVIEWER says that there are messages behind EOF.

So our question is: Can this pst file be repaired?
Scanpst and several other tools cannot repair the file.
Even Ontrack PowerControls 6.0 (which allows to repair pst files) was not able to help us.

Has anyone a suggestion?

Hi,

Thank you for contacting Outlook IT Pro Discussions Services.

From your description, I understand that  Outlook freezes when trying to start it. You tried to repair PST by the scanpst.exe tool. You found that the PST file is truncated by using PSTVIEWER. If there is any misunderstanding, please feel free to let me know.

Based on the current situation, I suggest first trying to start Outlook in safe mode and create a new Outlook profile to see if we can start Outlook. For the corrupted PST file, I will try my best to help you repair it.

Step 1: Start the Outlook program in safe mode

==============

1.       Click Start, point to All Programs, and then point to Microsoft Office.

2.        Press and hold the CTRL key, and then click the Office program you want to start.

If the problem does not occur in the safe mode, this issue might be related to some third-party add-ins in the Outlook program, we can try to disable them. Normally, you could do the following to disable the conflict add-ins in your Outlook program:

Disable add-ins

***************************

1.       Click File menu, click OptionsAdd-in, click Go button in the Manage: Com-in Add.

2.       Check if there are any add-ins, clear the checkbox to disable them.

3.       Close the Office program and restart it.

4.       Add one check back each time to the list of Add-In, restart the Office program, and repeat the above procedure. Once the issue reappears again, we can determine which add-in causes this problem and then disable it.

However, if the problem persists in the safe mode, let’s continue.

Step 2: Test with a new Outlook profile

==============

1.    Exit Outlook.

2.    Go to Start > Control Panel, click or double-click Mail.

3.    Click Show Profiles. Choose Prompt for a profile to be used.

4.    Click Add.

5.    Type a name for the profile, and then click OK.

6.    Start Outlook, and choose this new profile.

If this problem does not occur in the new Outlook profile, the old Outlook is corrupted. We can delete that and use a new Outlook profile.

Please take your time to try the suggestions and let me know the results at your earliest convenience. If anything is unclear or if there is anything I can do for you, please feel free to let me know.

Best Regards,

Hi Sally,

I'm so very sorry.
But after I didn't read any answer to my question for about two days I was thinking that this problem was too heavy for the crew :)
And then I forgot to click the page again.
Sorry...

Your suggestions could not help me because no addin is installed on this PC. And outlook /safe had the same hung.
I finally realised that the pst-file is really broken. And (due to the tree structure of this file type) it is not possible to restore parts of it like in an .jpg.
So the user had to let important mails send again and to remember appointments and tasks and to save them again in outlook.

This event had a good site: Users and management now think more about daily backup not only for important server. Because: IT can't solve problems concerning lost data with spells and incantations. This is no certification by microsoft I think :)

You can try Outlook Repair Toolbox software, which is embedded with advanced algorithms that ensure the recovery is quick and precise. It searches all lost, inaccessible, unusable emails, recovers and restores them into new PST file. This tool provides two modes of recovery such as Standard mode and Advance mode.

User can easily download the trial version of PST recovery utility from here http://www.pst.repairtoolbox.com/
