PDFing large workbooks crashes excel - works in safe mode

I have a large workbook (298 sheets) and when i PDF the workbook, Excel crashes at around the 200 mark.

If i start Excel is Safe mode, the document will print with no problems. I have disabled all Add-ins, yet the problem still exists.

What else does Safe Mode disable? Safe Mode is turning something off or disabling something that is causing the problem but i cannot find out what it is.

Thanks in advance

Hi typicalalex1,

Could you tell me whats the meaning of PDF in your issue? My understanding is you save the excel file as PDF file.

According to your description, the workbook print fine in safe mode and you have disabled the add-ins.

I suggest you check the macros and .xlb file. You can try to disable macros in your workbook and recreate an .xlb file in your computer.

XLB is a setting file format created by Microsoft Excel. XLB files contain custom settings for the toolbars (or command bars). XLB files can contain information such as which toolbars are visible, their position, and their function. XLB files can contain information such as which toolbars are visible, their position, and their function. XLB files allow for the transfer of customization information between computers and users.

For recreating an .xlb file, try the following method now:

  1. Go to the path in your own computer as shown in the following figure:

  2. Rename the *.xlb to *.old
  3. Restart Excel and it will create a new *.xlb file

Then, please check whether it is helpful. And please notice that if you delete or rename *.xlb file, the settings of custom toolbars will lost.

And you can collect the event log when the message show up and provide us with the whole error messages of event log.

Steps of collecting event log:

Open Event Viewer to check whether there's any error about the Excel/Word crash issue.

Press Win + R, type "eventvwr" in the blank box, press Enter. In the Event Viewer, browse to Windows Logs -> Application, there may be some errors after the crash.

Hope its helpful.

Regards,
