Over 7 Million Messages with an unreachable destination! Please help!
Some friends of mine at the local church asked me to take a look at their exchange server. I found it was being used to relay spam emails from russia. So I closed the smtp ports on the firewal, then I followed this KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324958 I am currently cleaning up the exchange smtp server que and am on steps 11-16 It may take several minutes for the SMTP Virtual Server to stop. After the Default SMTP Virtual Server has stopped, right-click the Default SMTP Virtual Server again, and then click Start. It may take several minutes for the Default SMTP Virtual Server to start. After the Default SMTP Virtual Server has started, wait about 10 minutes. Now the Default SMTP Virtual Server can re-enumerate the messages and put them in a single queue for the SmallBusiness SMTP Connector or for the one that you named when you created it in step 1.b.After about 10 minutes, expand Default SMTP Virtual Server, and then click Queues.Note the total number of messages on the right next to the Small Business SMTP Connector. This number has to stabilize so that all the messages can be deleted at the same time.Right-click Queues, and then click Refresh approximately every 15 minutes. Repeat step 15 until the total number of messages remains constant. ---- So I am refreshing every so often and currently there is 7 million plus messages piling up in the "messages with an unreachable destination" Que. If the messages were being relayed from the server for a few days could it be all the emails just haven't qued up yet? I am unable to delete any of them without the exchange system manager freezing up. I am out of ideas at the moment and am looking for a little help. Thanks!

I tried that, a message "cannot delete "filename" it is in use by another person or program". yesterday I turned off all the exchange services and tried to delete them that way. Still no luck.

Still no luck. Stop the SMTP service. Exchange 2003 uses that service to send and receive e-mail. Once the servie is stopped, rename the Queue folder and create a new one. You should be able to restart the SMTP service and then sort through the stuff in the renamed Queue directory -- or just delete it. --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP
