Outlook trying to retrive data from exchange in another site
Hello, I demoted DC in 1 site last Sunday using dcpromo. [ Was not the last DC to be removed from domain ] Now I am facing mail related problem. When some1 tries to send an e-mail, Outlook pop-ups at taskbar saying "Trying to retrive data from abc_exchange.child.domain.com . This abc_exchange is in another site and a child domain. E-mail goes out from my local exchange only but it routes in between and Outlook freezes. I don't no why local outlook clients are not trying to retrive data from my local exchange server. I rebooted all DC's in my site as well as in child site too. Did manual replication. But still same problem. What can be the issue? Regards, Amey.

Some more info >> - Clients are in another domain. [ That migration we did 1 month back. ] I have DC's of another domain in my campus already. But in my child site, all clients are still on old domain. -All DC's in my parent site are GC's. -All DC's in my child domain are now GC [ I did that yesterday ] -I had 3 DC's + 1 exchange in parent domain. Out of 3 dc's I removed 1 old DC. -Rest 2 DC's already holding Schema master and other roles +DNS. I am now running Perfmon tool on my parent exchange to take logs. Update : I just got reference of this link >> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824118 I have click and made DC in child domain as GC also. in child domain I have 1 DC + 1 exchange which communicates with my parent exchange through VPN tunnel and then my parent exchange delivers the e-mail to out side world. Update Got 1 mroe reference link >> http://smtp25.blogspot.com/2009/09/o...data-from.html My problem is exact same. It shows FQDN of my child exchange server.

I believe you are having 2007/2010 server. As per the requirements there should be a GC server in each site for lookups to be performed by HT server. As understood you demoted one DC while two other are present, Are the two servers holding the role responsiblity of the old demoted server. Try checking in the Event viewer logs of HT server in particular related to AD events. Make sure it is using any of the active DC , I think you should get an event. ( event maybe from 208X ).

No I am using Exchange 2003 Standard edition. I figured 1 thing. in DNS of another domain entry of my parent exchange is there. May be con incidance that remote admin of another domain added that entry on next day. Can that be the reason? When I disconnect my parent exchange and perform nslookup, my DNS server resolved it as exchange_Server.other_domain.com with same static IP from my subnet.

Check for Event 2080 in the problematic site where exchange server is. Your Exchange server properly getting Configuration DC. Check for Event 2080 in Windows application logs on Exchange server ( exchange DS). Also Check detdiag and netdiag errors . ( Restart SA Service or even Restart with Sucessful 2080 event should be good for DS)

Hi, Is the abc_exchange.child.domain.com Exchange server's name? Additionally, press Ctrl+right click Outlook icon in System Tray, select Connection Status, let me know the server name of the Mail and Directory, and which site does the server belong? Whether all the clients have this issue? Thanks Allen

Hello Allen, abc_exchange.child.domain.com is not the actual name. But outlook tries to retrive data from my child exchange server in another site and FQDN apears as I mentioned above. Thanks for the hint to check connection ststaus. For "Directory " > connected my my child domain server & child mail server. It's not eastblishing Directory connection to any of my DC's from parent domain. For "Mail " > It's connected to my parent mail server. You want me to send actual snapshot to you? And yes all clients in single site having this issue. Regards, Amey.

Hi Amey, Apparently, the FQDN is not the name of the Exchange server but GC name. Please understand that the Directory is connected to the GC not the DC. Is there any GC in the parent domain? If no GC in the parent domain, the Outlook client will use the GC in external site. To confirm the connection status, you can check the 2080 event, and post here. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316300 Thanks Allen

Hello Allen, There are GC's in parent domain. I did netdiag, dcdiag and found 1 of DC in my parent domain throwing SPN registration error for another DC in same domain. This is going crazy. I don't no from where to start for torubleshooting now. :(

Hi Amey, 1, Are all the users having this issue or just certain user? 2, Check the IP addresses of the problematic Outlook client and the Exchange server which hosts the problematic user account, and verify if they are in the same subnet. Based on my experience, this behavior may occur if the AD sites and subnets are not configured properly, and the configuration may cause the Outlook clients, Exchange servers, and DC/GC servers to be dropped in different sites unintentionally. If it's one user, please just refer to the below article to set the closest GC: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;319206 Thanks Allen

Hello Allan, I have identified the problem now. What happening is my parent mail server trying to retrive address book entries from a GC in my child site. Yesterday I removed DC role from both DC's in my child domain & my mail server got stuck. My mail server is not able to connect to any GC's in my parent domain. As of now I revert back and places role of GC's on child DC's. Can you give hints how can I repair this problem? I want to make sure that my parent exchange server will contact info from local GC? Regards, Amey.

Problem is resolved. I had to edit "Default domain controller policy" from gpmc.msc. I modified setting so that Exchange will search for DC in my local site only. Thanks for your support.
