Outlook meeting cancelled by attendee not the organizer
How is is possible for someone to cancel a recurring meeting who is listed as an attendee of the Outlook meeting? Most users are on Outlook 2007 SP2.

Can you be a little more specific? Are you referring to the permissions on the original meeting request?

What permissions does the user that cancelled the meeting request have on the folder or calendar?

No permission on the calendar for the room mailbox. It looks like when updates are made to recurring meeting the meeting organizer switches to one of the attendees. Have you seen something like this before?

Hi, As per my experience, you can cancel the recurring meeting by the following methods: <1>Use the organizer of the meeting to cancel recurring meeting <2>Give an account full mailbox permissions, and open the meeting via outlook to cancel the meeting, which you can refer to the link: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996343.aspx <3>Grant an account delegate permission to the organizer, give delegated Editor or Owner permission of the calendar, which you can refer to the link: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/allow-someone-else-to-manage-your-mail-and-calendar-HA010075081.aspx. And then you can open the calendar of the organizer in outlook. You can double click it in Calendar tab and cancel the meeting. If you encounter any difficulties, please let us know. ThanksSophia Xu

Sophia, I think you have misunderstood my original post. We have experienced an issue on recurring meetings where the ownership of the meeting reverts to one of the attendees. At that time they are able to cancel the meeting or if they have not accepted the meeting update and ownership has reverted to them then they lose the ability to accept the request because Outlook thinks they are the owner. Can you please let me know a workaround or a fix for this? I want to prevent meeting ownership from switching. Thanks

Most users are on Outlook 2007 SP2. What release of Exchange are you running? Are you at the most recent update rollup? There were fixes in one of the last two(?) rollups for ActivSync problems that cause this sort of behavior. --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

We are currently on Exchange 2007 SP2 RU5. I have seen that going up to 2007 SP3 RU5 could possibly resolve this issue but we are planning on moving to Exchange 2010 fairly soon. Are there any temporary fixes or workarounds for this type of behavior? Thanks.

Is there a way to restrict the management of appointments from mobile devices while still allowing the use of ActiveSync? Are there any Outlook tricks are are useful for this situation with meeting requests?

Are there any workarounds before attempting the service pack upgrade?

Or disable the use of ActiveSync on any mailbox that uses any other client than Windows Mobile. Why the reluctance to keep your servers up-to-date? You're not doing yourself, or your users, any favors by not keeping up with service packs and RUs (even if you stay "one behind" in RUs). Saying you're moving to Exchange 2010 "fairly soon" could mean months if you've skipped E2K7 SP3 and RU4 (which have been available for some time). --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

Rich, I saw there were some issues with E2K7 SP3 RU4. Have they been resolved? Aren't there additional RUs for E2K7 SP3? I have some additional questions: Is this a CAS issue or a mailbox server role issue? If the issue lies with the CAS server and we are planning to go to Exchange 2010 soon, then once we stand up the CAS 2010 servers the issue should be resolved. If the issue lies with the mailbox server role then I can see where we would look more closely at upgrading the Exchange 2007 service pack and update rollups. Please respond with your thoughts.

I have recently upgraded the Exchange Servers to 2007 SP3 UR5 and thus far have not seen a re-occurance of the "Meeting Organizer" error. Is there a way I can test this in an attempt to re-generate the error? Thanks

I, too, am having the same issue. I have an Organizer who received a DECLINE and a CANCELLATION from an Attendee. She inadvertently clicked REMOVE FROM CALENDAR, thinking it would remove from the attendees calendar (She is his delegate). It removed the meeting from hers, had to restore from back, which is always pleasant (not). We are running Exchange 2007 SP3 RU5 with Outlook 2007/2010 and all updates. I currently have a ticket open with Microsoft.
