Outlook keeps displaying security alert after removing account

Hi,

I had a few Exchange accounts configured in my Outlook 2013. When launching Outlook, it displayed the well-known Security Alert dialog for one of the accounts, which cannot be disabled even if you install the certificate:

Basically I can live with this dialog, but it is very weird that I have just deleted this account from Outlook, restarted it a couple of times since that, but Outlook still displays this dialog, regarding the deleted account.

How can I get rid of this, and where else can this account exist on my computer, once I've deleted it from Outlook? I would expect all data being removed when deleting an account...

Thanks for your help,

Hi,

This problem occurs only in an instance of Outlook 2013 that has the September 14, 2014 update or a later version installed. Please check if you have this update installed:

In Outlook 2013, tap or click the File tab, and then click Office Account.

1. If you see the "Office Updates" heading, you have a Click-to-Run installation of Office. If the listed version is 15.0.4649.1003 or a later version, as shown in the following screen shot, you have the September 14, 2014 update or a later version installed.

2. If you do not see "Office Updates," you have an MSI installation of Office. In this case, click About Outlook. If the listed version is 15.0.4649.1000 or a later version, as shown in the following screen shot, you have the September 14, 2014 update or a later version installed.

To fix the issue, apply the update that is described in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

2899544 Hotfix KB2899544 for Outlook 2013 November 11, 2014 (Outlook-x-none.msp)

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the response. It sounded way too easy to be true, and I actually run into a problem: with the 32 bit Outlook 2013, obtained as part of an Office 365 subscription, so being a Click-to-Run edition, the installer package says it would not have an effect on any of the installed products, and denies installing the patch.

Should I need for the patch somewhere else to work with the CtR deployment?

Thanks for the update.

Based on my deep research, this issue generally occurs when the URL that you are trying to access is not listed in either the Subject or the Subject Alternative Name (SAN) of the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate for the website. Although different organizations' configurations may differ slightly, this issue typically occurs because the organization's Autodiscover Domain Name System (DNS) records are configured incorrectly.

To resolve this issue, you may have to change your Autodiscover DNS records (internal, external, or both). For detailed information regarding this issue, you can have a look at the following KB article:

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the update. Yes, I know this situation well, a couple of years ago I used this account as well, and I learned this workaroundhowever the account and domain the autodiscovery information of which causes the problem has been deleted from Outlook (and the Mail control panel, as well), and the weird thing is that Outlook keeps asking for information regarding a deleted account. It looks like not all information have been deleted. For me, moreover, it looks as if Outlook would start to claim for such information regarding the domain of a third party with which I never had any contact.

Am I incorrectly expecting Outlook to not display any prompt, warning and other communication regarding a deleted account?

Are you configuring these Exchange accounts in a single Outlook profile or separate profiles? Maybe there are some remaining files or registry entries that are causing this issue.

If they are configured in separate profiles, please also make sure the profile information has been removed from following registry path:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Outlook\Profiles

If the accounts are configured in a single Outlook profile, we may try creating a new profile in Control Panel > Mail and then reconfigure your Exchange accounts in the new profile to see the result.

Hi Steve,

I have one profile, from which I have deleted the account, and the location in the Registry you mentioned did not contain anything related to the deleted account. When I run a search with the name of the domain to which the account belongs, however, I came across a few hits, some of those coupled with PureSoft Outlook Todo Pane, an add-in to simulate the legacy Outlook Todo Pane. This was still referencing to the task list and calendar of the removed account. Deleting these references from the data of the relevant registry values solved the problem.

I've also realized c:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\ contained autodiscovery XML file of the deleted account, and I've also deleted that file.

Now it seems the problem has been solved. Actually I think only the add-in caused the message to display, but since I've deleted the autodisco file sooner than realizing the add-on's references, I cannot tell for sure.

Thanks for your help.
