Outlook error 552: Message rejected for spam or virus content (no virus, with and without attachments)

Outlook is blocking some of my emails, and I'm getting:

552 sid:M20A1i00E2qfw2F01:Message rejected for spam or virus content

--------------

EDIT: This has happened in Windows XP, with Outlook 2010 and AVG antivirus,

as well as Windows 7 (fresh install), Outlook 2010, and no antivirus (yet).

No matter if attachments are in email or not; It looks like sometimes if I try to re-send same message, but change the subject slightly (sometimes just adding a space) - it will go through.

The error I'm getting is instant, in my inbox, making me think it does not reach the ISP or SMTP server. Must be something internal, in Outlook. Any settings I can change to avoid this?

Same thing here! It seems to happen when we reply or forward an email. I also have Godaddy but they couldn't help. I'm not sure this is their problem. It seems like the email is not even making out onto the internet. Is Outlook causing this for some reason? Maybe a recent patch upgrade? I cant seem to figure this out.

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Yes, there is a solution...

The problem is with godaddy

Every email account has a limit (250 relays for the last 24 hours)

The problem feels random because you are not going to remember how you reach that number, most of us get to answer our emails when we can and as many as possible. So you do it now, you get the problem a few minutes later, it works because in the last 24hrs now, you have less than 250 emails sent out.

Solution, use another of your unused email accounts (it can have the same and look of your default one).

Questions?

Great info Gary..

I agree, the office is my Brother in Laws business, and he calls me for computer stuff, but this one is a stumper..

they have been running all day (today 24th Jan) with no issue but yesterday (Monday) after being away all weekend

with machines OFF they had issues most of the day...

just a note I mentioned before..... their problem started about two weeks ago on a tuesday and all at once...
they had no issues for years...

I'm wondering if the AT&T connection and their upgrade to the UVerse crap is part of the issue...

Hell I don't know at this point...    the reason I moved them away from APLUS net is because they said it was an OUTLOOK issue

and I thought it was the servers....

SO :    maybe there is a common usage thread that the providers and their servers have issue with...this would explain
the commonality with APLUS and GoDaddy...

I have read some other items on the outlook security settings from other folks, saying it was too strict...
but this sure looks like an 'implant' and I hate to say the word 'virus' , as I have scanned with the latest Norton and it gives a clean bill of health
on the systems...

( scratching bald head ... .still )

iamkevin..

Question:  is your System Administrator bounce back mail instant ?

Can anyone explan how the servers at godaddy can respond this quick ?  It usually takes a few seconds to
log in and identify before sending the regular mail.

the bounce back on our side it shows up almost after you press the send key..

So then if godaddy is the issue, then they have really fast response times !

what am I missing....

PS I am not a GoDaddy advocate, just don't want to place blame with out all the real facts... and not assumptions
on what it 'might' be...

thanks

The error does show up relatively quickly. I have 4 accounts linked to ThunderBird, the day I was having the problem was Jan 10.
I could not send a new email from GD. It was a simple email, all text no attachments. I hit send and within a couple seconds got
the equivalent 552 error for TB. I copied/pasted the recipient & text to the my gmail account in TB and it sent without issue.
This happened within 2 minutes of hitting the send button. I don't have anything goofy setup, GD uses its own smtp and
Gmail uses its own smtp. I had same problem the next day with the same result. Since then my account has not had a problem,
but 4 other accounts under our domain have had this problem with one being as recent as yesterday.

And don't let response time mislead you, if you have multiple accounts in your outlook, try sending a simple email from 1 to another.
I can typically receive that email within seconds of hitting send. I just sent one from GD to 3 of my accounts (including back to GD)
and they all had it in under 5 seconds.

The email that was rejected yesterday morning was text and an attached PDF of a scanned in document.
The error does come up within a few seconds. There was a TB version update (12/23/11) but nothing else has changed on
these computers. I have 20 GD accounts under this domain and have only experienced the problem on 5 accounts.
(assuming the other 15 are not withholding information from me.)

I'm not necessairly sour on GDs service they provide (cheap & normally reliable), or putting them 100% at fault,
but the lack of support is my biggest annoyance. They keep asking for header information which there is none since
there is no relay to a server, and they keep suggesting there is a virus. We run Symantec and it has yet to detect anything.
They offer zero support and refuse to put anytime in to help out several customers of theirs who have similar problems.
Check out the GD forum, there are multiple threads about this issue over the last two weeks.

Since this is such an intermittent issue, I cannot think of any setting in Outlook or TB that would be causing this. Besides, if I
wanted to fix email problems, I would host our own server.......

I'm also annoyed because I have attempted to post responses in their forums with regards to this issue, and only 1 out of 5 responses have actually been posted. After you hit submit, it goes to a "moderator"? Which begs the question, what else are they NOT posting to the forums???

The last GD update to this issue (yesterday morning) referenced

"We are currently in the process of improving our filtering system, and are continuously tuning it as it is rolled out."

Gary, I see you posted to this thread. I agree, whether they refer to it as filtering or a firewall, to me this is their problem.  That thread is the first I've noticed them admitting they have a problem and not blaming Outlook, TB, or something else.

Has anyone heard/read that GD made a change around Jan 9th explaining why this problem is happening in the first place? I have not....

This is an update I received from GD Tech support.. .

"As to why these errors are being encountered, we are currently in the process of improving our filtering system, and are continuously tuning it as it is rolled out. This is why when encountering a 552 error, you are only encountering it intermittently based on the servers your messages are being routed through. To better adjust our filtering system and reduce the blocking of legitimate messages, we need either the bounced 552 reply or the original message that triggered this error. As you have not provided an attached .EML copy of either, our advanced support will not be able to assist in correcting this matter till the information has been provided."

Why is it so hard to understand the message has no info on which server rejected it? I'm not familiar with the wording of the 552 error, but from the earlier posts, it appears that there is no server information to supply them. At least that's the way it is with TB.

I  have to resort to posting to only this forum because the majority of my posts to the GD forum don't seem to go through... If I knew a legitimate alternative to GD I would have switched by now. Any suggestions? They provide domain services, and host webspace & email for us. CHEAP (I suppose we get what we pay for....those dumb $1M superbowl commercials)

Sorry guys, just got hit again with the SYS ADMIN failure notice on an outgoing email..

Here in FLA we are upgrading ATT to UVERSE crap...

just as a poll   how many of us having this issue use ATT ?

 I DO !

I also see my Windoes Internet Explorer go 'NOT RESPONDING" all day long ...  I know this is a different issue
but wanted to throw this problem on the table in case of a UVERSE link..

I had no issues with IE until  the day after the upgrade...

we are paying way too much for this kind of service.... and worst of all they have us by the Bells since we are so
intrenched in the net.

ok  off soap box..

I just encountered the error. and yes, it popped up in under a second.

No attachment, just text and a hyperlink in my signature that's been present for every email I've sent for the past 3 years on GD.....

I  left the compose window open didn't change a single thing in the email, and approx 30 mins later I hit send again and away it went without issue (assuming it makes it to the recipient). the ONLY difference was 30mins of elapsed time, resulting in POSSIBLY a different SMTP server that it tried to relay through. That's what I suspect at this point. perhaps they upgraded or added a relay server. that would explain the intermittent nature of this annoying problem.

other Kevin,

are you referring to bouncing emails as emails reaching an SMTP server, and you are seeing a return email in your inbox stating your email did not go through to the recipient?

or are you referring to a message window that pops up in outlook, (or my case thunderbird) like the one I posted?

After much frustration, I had to switch our email to a different host site.  Cost me $170 but I have not had one email kicked back for a 552 error.  I have same Outlook, same antivirus and firewall, same email address.... Its not from any of those issues... Its a GoDaddy issue that I could no longer live with... maybe less money on commercials... more effort on problem solving.

Wow, I just got what I feel is a pretty good answer from a GoDaddy customer support person.  Here is the recap:

In 2003, the Can't Spam Act was implemented.  Since then, large email hosting companies like GoDaddy have had to constantly balance the filters on their servers.  If a certain email account gets flagged as spam, sometimes the entire server gets shut down until GoDaddy can either adjust the filters or weed out the problem customer who is spamming.  This causes a lot of other emailers whose emails go through that same server to have an interruption in their service.  Therefore, Godaddy (and other email hosting companies) are constantly walking a fine line.  If they make the email filters too strict, the server overreacts and treats our harmless emails as spam or a virus.  If they make the filters too loose, then the whole server may be shut down because of a spammer. When I asked why it goes through if I try to resend the email, he said it's because different servers have different filters and he reminded me that it is a constant balance they will always be working on.

This customer service representative agreed that this is a big pain for all of the non-spammers out there and they are constantly working on this.  When I asked what solutions we had, he said I should try removing hyperlinks in my emails to see which link was being flagged as spam or a virus.  I complained and said that really was inconvenient for me to do and he agreed, but also admitted that that's the best he can do and GoDaddy is always working on this issue.  He also mentioned that I would probably have this same issue if I were to change to a new email hosting company because they are held to the same Can't Spam Act regulations.

He did mention that, if we got a personal hosting server, this probably wouldn't be an issue because the filters would be a lot looser, since it would be just our emails going through that server.  It would cost extra money, however.  So, I'm going to try removing the hyperlinks in my emails to see if that works.  If not, I may just have to upgrade to a personal server.

Just moved my entire account ($5300/year) off of Godaddy. Went with Hostgator. So far not a single problem, but its only been 5 hours of actual work time. 60 users, no issues. I'll keep everyone posted.

Why is this so confusing for you?  There are dozens of other people here who have narrowed it down to being a GoDaddy problem (that's the reaosn I found this thread too).  You are having a different problem.  Two separate problems don't make a "bigger problem".  It honestly is beginning to sound like you work for GoDaddy and you're trying to point the finger elsewhere.

As far as the 552 error and how quickly you are receiving it, this is not a bounce message.  A bounce message would be an email that is accepted by the remote system (250 OK) and then returned to the sender for some delivery or policy issue.  What you are getting here is, during the transmission of the message, their server is responding with a 552 status instead of 250.  The email client immediately sees that and creates a new "message" in your local inbox telling you about the 552 and delivery failure.

Your local service provider should have an outbound SMTP server available for your use.  From all of the people who have been getting the runaround, your best bet may be to switch your outbound to them.  It doesn't resolve the problem of GoDaddy aggressively filtering messages at the edge servers, and it probably won't be a solution if you're a mobile user, but it may resolve some relief for those that just need to send email from a desktop in an office.

Not confusing at all , I want proof....  after switching from APLUS NET for the 'exact' problem ( NOT DIFFERENT )
to GoDaddy the issuse is still present, so two separate ISP's show the same issue...

The 'bigger problem' as charged is not knowing what the real problem is and guessing based on the symptoms.

If you are sure it is GoDaddy servers, fine , tell us exactly what the problem is, not the symptom. we all share the same
symptoms.

I have Godaddy on my personal business and have no issues with mail whatsoever, so if it was the GoDaddy servers then
why does my business not share the same ill's as my brother in law's ?

I will not be so quick to point the finger at one ISP without the facts, that is irresponsible, I prefer to know the truth and
so far I have not heard anyone share evidence to the real 'problem' , we are only sharing our symptoms, guessing and mostly
looking to blame 'someone'.

I've talked with the GD folks in excess, some were helpfull, none were conclusive, so this is still not solved for me.
I'm not going to bear the burdon of moving to another ISP, (again), APLUS.NET and GoDaddy have exhibited the same issues
on my bro-in-laws office machines over the past 2 months.   Some days are better than others....

I'd ask everyone to offer evidence of the exact point of issue, if not then we keep asking and looking and sharing...

I don't expect this to just go away until, we get some expert involved and he/she points to the problem that we can all experience and fix.

This is absolutely an issue with GoDaddy and whatever device they have setup to filter spam/virus... more than likely part of a UTM bundle on their firewall.

I'm not sure why GoDaddy webmail works, but 'm sure this is a content filter of some type on their firewall or email security device using some sort of reputation based system for websites.  Cisco and Barracuda are two that I know of that use web reputation based filtering.

GoDaddy techs - you need to get your head out of your arse and tweak your settings (or turn off the feature entirely) until it works without so many false positives.  Get on the horn with Cisco (or whoever) to get this worked out.

I had this 552 bounceback sending mail problem for 2 weeks, it was affecting only a few users and randomly. I read through all this forum with no straight answer and after the 4th time dealing by phone with godaddy customer service they finally gave me an answer.

The problem is:

your domain has been added to the spam blocking list and they have to remove it from there.

They sent me the following email:

Dear Valued Customer, Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. At this time we have reviewed your concerns of getting a "552" bounceback when sending emails. We have submitted the information provided to our development staff and it should be removed from our filters in a few hours. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. We recommend reviewing any email marketing you are doing and make sure you have a valid unsubscribe process, as well as validate your list of marketing recipients to reduce the amount of possible spam flags from recipients. It's possible that while some people receiving your messages have signed up for them, some have simply marked them as SPAM instead of going through the unsubscribe process if one exists. If you find yourself marketing more with your email, we find many of our users consider our Express Email Marketing service that does offer an subscribe/unsubscribe feature. It also provides details on who's actually receiving/reading their emails instead of just deleting them or marking them as SPAM.

So, what you have to do is keep pushing them until they send you the same email. I hope this information works for you.

My issue with 552 error msgs related to outgoing emails with attachments. All other emails went through without issue. Godaddy was of no help, other than to log and escalate my problem, with a promise of a call-back.

I figured I'd try a little trouble-shooting on my own. I used the godaddy web portal to send the same email with the attachment, and it went through without a bounce-back. That told me that my problem could be related to my Outlook email client, or my local AntiVirus/Firewall software filters.

I disabled my antivirus and firewall software and attempted to resend the email through Outlook. I got an immediate bounce-back. So, now I'm thinking that it might be an issue between Outlook and Godaddy's filters. It occurred to me, however, to examine the actual attachment a little more closely. It was an excel file, with a very long file name, with numbers, a special character (a hyphen), and upper and lowercase letters with words separated by spaces.

The thought came to me that perhaps the long file name with spaces and mixed characters could be the culprit. Following this brain-fart, I renamed the file to [one word].xls, and resent the email through Outlook. And Voila! No bounce-back.

My conclusion is that in my particular situation, Outlook's own filters was the problem, as sending that same email through godaddy's email web portal (along with the original attachment name) had no issues. Incidentally, I'm using Outlook 2010. I can't say whether previous versions of Outlook would have the restriction on file names.

Perhaps others have been having the same types of problems with attachments using Outlook through Godaddy's email hosting service. I'm hoping my experience might help some folks.

NOTE

I should add that some of my plain txt emails sent through Outlook are generating bounce-backs for no apparent reason. Sending the same plant txt email through godaddy's email web portal goes through with no bounce-backs. The only variable I can think of at this point is the godaddy outgoing pop mail server address, configured in Outlook.

Like one reader in the thread mentioned, I'm going to temporarily swap out godaddy's outgoing server address for ISP's, and then see if it makes a difference.

Server is back online. Godaddy server issue fixed within the 72 hours of SLA. No client side action needed (we had to create a ticket on godaddy of course)

Hi,

We are having the same problem. started on the 29th as well. I think maybe server is compromised. This is the host information: host a2nlsmtpcp-v01.shr.prod.iad2.secureserver.net [198.71.232.0]. Wich is your host?

Godaddy has agreed this is their issue and are trying to solve it in the 72 hours they should have. I am very worried as I saw someone complaining of the 2 weeks he was without email. 2 weeks? My boss would kill me.
