Outlook error 552: Message rejected for spam or virus content (no virus, with and without attachments)

Outlook is blocking some of my emails, and I'm getting:

552 sid:M20A1i00E2qfw2F01:Message rejected for spam or virus content

--------------

EDIT: This has happened in Windows XP, with Outlook 2010 and AVG antivirus,

as well as Windows 7 (fresh install), Outlook 2010, and no antivirus (yet).

No matter if attachments are in email or not; It looks like sometimes if I try to re-send same message, but change the subject slightly (sometimes just adding a space) - it will go through.

The error I'm getting is instant, in my inbox, making me think it does not reach the ISP or SMTP server. Must be something internal, in Outlook. Any settings I can change to avoid this?

Let me guess. Your email is hosted by Godaddy. They are having problems and I am seeing this now on three different domains. I would contact Godaddy support which has been horrible about it. They want emails so they can examine the problem which has been going on for some time now. If they need my help to fix their problem then they are incompetent. This is a widespread issue.

I get the same errors for the last month and a half:

This is me just replying to my boss on my same domain name.  Doesn't appear to really leave outlook.  After over an hour on the phone with GoDaddy, and the techs talking to his supervisors, they have concluded it is not them that it is either Outlook or our Anti-Virus.  So very frustrating.

Doing several hours of research and there seem to be a lot of people having this error, and while some have Godaddy hosting, not everyone does... which leads me to believe there is something doing this, not necessarily GoDaddy.

Is there such a possibility?

Your mail account has been stolen, hackers used your mailbox send spam messages somehow. And the mail system detected your account is not security and put it into blacklist.

However, I am not saying the supposition is correct.

If possible, please setup another mail account in your Outlook and check if we still received the error message. If yes, the issue is caused by Outlook site. If not, it should be account’s problem.

having the same problem. comes and goes seemingly at random. Are you experiencing the same thing? Also, did you recently have a virus that resulted in hiding most of your operating system. I had this virus removed it by doing a system restore. After the system restore I found that my signatures in outlook were gone. Not sure if there is a connection. Please let me know if you have had similar experience.
January 19th, 2012 3:48am

Same thing here! It seems to happen when we reply or forward an email. I also have Godaddy but they couldn't help. I'm not sure this is their problem. It seems like the email is not even making out onto the internet. Is Outlook causing this for some reason? Maybe a recent patch upgrade? I cant seem to figure this out.

Jen,

Did you figure this out yet? What ISP are you using? Where are you located? Maybe we can work together to see if we can find some common issues.

I'm in Philadelphia. I use a full T provided by COVAD. I use godaddy to host my email accounts. This has been happening for about a month.

January 19th, 2012 9:51pm

By the way this is happening on multiple machines.Win XP - and Win 7 Outlook 2007 and 2010

AVG, TREND, and Norton antivirus.

Still working on it - still happening on two different machines.  Tried disabling Anti-Virus which was suggested, didn't help. (Microsoft Security Essentials).

Happening on my machine and my bosses (We're the only two workers right now).  GoDaddy Host, been working with them for weeks and they have no clue.  They keep saying it is an OutLook Problem.  Using Windows 7, Office 2010.  Sent 3 messages to my boss this morning just fine.  Another email to her took 4 tries to get it to send, kept bouncing back.

In WA, so other side of the country.  Use Century Link for ISP at work location, right now due to the storms working from home, she uses Comcast (Still bounces) I use Comcast (still bouncing).

My husband works in IT for Microsoft and had him look at my headers and he can't figure out what is going on either.  Crazy.  It has to be something on GoDaddy's side, the outgoing port or something they did recently because when I google the error so many forums are filled with this and all through GoDaddy hosting.

January 19th, 2012 10:08pm

This is the EXACT issue I am having with the same results from Godaddy.

Here is what a coworker and I think might be going on.

Godaddy says its not them because the email is not even getting to their server. If it was it would have bounce back information. the email ISNT bouncing its just not even getting there. We tend to think they have a firewall that is blocking the email as a threat before it even gets to the server. The firewall wont send back a message to us, it just thinks the email is an "Intruder" and denies access to the server.  Outlook sees that the message in not getting anywhere and creates a generic error code 552 sid:PZZ01i00K0l5Aqq01:Message rejected for spam or virus content

I'm bouncing my theory past them now. I'll keep you posted. Let me know if you get any updates.

Thanks

DJ,

We'll figure it out. I think I'm on the right trail here with the firewall thing. I wont rest until they fix this! Make sure you report it to tech support so they know we are all having the same problem.

I'm going to predict that they continue to deny it anything on their end, but the problem will magically clear up soon.

Please keep us posted with any updates so we can team up and solve this problem. :)

January 20th, 2012 3:56pm

OK everyone,

I just got off of the phone with Godaddy. They are still saying its an Outlook problem. When I asked how come Outllook works with all other SMTP email providers he couldn't answer me. He told me Outlook dosent like the Gogaddy server for some reason and there is nothing wrong on their end. I explained that Microsoft was not going to change their software to like Godaddy. Godaddy is providing a service and they have to make their product work with Microsoft, not the other way around. He acknowledged that he is constantly fielding calls about this problem but ther is nothing they can do. He stuck to his guns and said its a Microsoft problem.

BOTTOM LINE:

Its time to leave Godaddy.

here is my final post.

Godaddy has refused to fix their problem. Time to move on Check out this service. Its cheap and it actually works with Outlook. You dont have to do anything except change your SMTP out to smtp2go.com

First, my apologies to the Office forums to continually clog this space with a non-office problem :)

Second, GoDaddy does NOT know what they are doing - their phone techs say it is Outlook Error, their Forums tech say it's a known error and they are working on it... ?? Which is it?

Third, we're done.  My boss has had it and we're looking at HostGator right now of all the options we've researched.

I've heard speculation that GoDaddy is gonna go out of business at this rate and that some hacker mad at Godaddy for their original stance on SOPA is writing scripts to bomb their ports to take them down, ha.

Anyways, best of luck to you all, to bad we couldn't fix this - it's a pain to migrate everything, but I think it needs to be done at this point.

January 20th, 2012 6:34pm

Greetings all,

I have also been working on this 552 error. In our setting the issue appears to affect forwarding and replying more frequently than sending a new message. It does not appear to matter who the recipient is (including a tech at Go Daddy that I was working with...that got rejected also).

Most of my office (7 staff) are using Windows 7 Professional and Outlook 2010. We all own our laptops personally, so the virus/malware software varies. I am using Norton 360 version 5.1.0.29

I have two email accounts in my Outlook configuration. One is for our Go Daddy hosted email domain (cihie.org) the other is for my ISP hosted domain (mtco.com). Here's what I find interesting:

  • if I send a message from the cihie.org domain and it gets rejected with the 552 as described
  • and then go to my sent items
  • open the sent message
  • choose to Resend the message (under the Actions button in the toolbar)
  • and THEN change the "From" to my address at the mtco.com domain
  • ...the message is successfully sent 100% of the time (so far)

I have an open incident with Go Daddy and have submitted two identical messages--one sent from cihie.org that was rejected and one sent from mtco.com that was successful--as attached Outlook items. Those are now in the hands of the "email gurus."

Also...please note that if you view the internet message header for the "rejection" notice, there is NO internet address information; the message is definately NOT getting to any email servers...so there is no SMTP header update. It may be absolutely true that the message is being rejected locally by Outlook...but the question remains--why is the rejection related to a sender from a Go Daddy hosted email domain and no OTHER email domain.

We finally got a tech at GoDaddy to give us another option that so far has been working this weekend! We moved to one of their microsoft exchange servers.  So far everything in Outlook has been sending.  Hoping this will be the solution! My boss said it was 100 a year - so it's not a free move, but one that is working.

January 22nd, 2012 8:52pm

All..

I've been fighting this issue for 2 weeks..

Here are some details that may help..  or not..

Office email, all 5 accounts have the bounce back and no send issue
was using APLUS net  , changed to GoDaddy.

Problem was gone for a week, now is back.

I also have GoDaddy at home with ATT ISP
Using same email address and same godaddy servers, the mail will send ever time with no issue

the difference is we are using MicroSoft Exchange in the office for shared Email data base
this may have something to do with it.

Even if I bring my laptop on the wireless in the office network, the office email works with no problem.

so that is all I know but I've discounted that GoDaddy servers are the issue as my email works fine
from my laptop that does not share the exchange database.

any database gurus out there, I've read about signatures and security levels but it's beyond me.

let's keep this going....  THERE IS A SOLUTION...

January 23rd, 2012 9:40pm

Yes, there is a solution...

The problem is with godaddy

Every email account has a limit (250 relays for the last 24 hours)

The problem feels random because you are not going to remember how you reach that number, most of us get to answer our emails when we can and as many as possible. So you do it now, you get the problem a few minutes later, it works because in the last 24hrs now, you have less than 250 emails sent out.

Solution, use another of your unused email accounts (it can have the same and look of your default one).

Questions?

so what you are saying is that

after I rcv in excess of 250 emails they become spam ?

does this include outgoing ?
and

is this for each email address or the domain as a whole ?

Jamie,

While this is a known reason for Godaddy message bounce this is not the problem we are all reporting in this post. When you exceed your daily relay limit with Godaddy the server will bounce your email back and give you return path in your email header. Our emails are not even reaching the server, they are being blocked before they get there. There is no return path or server rejection!

January 24th, 2012 2:24pm

On Friday I paid the $50 a year and bought SMTP2go. I then changed my smtp server from smtpout.secureserver.net (Godaddy smtp server address) to smtp2go.com. 4 days and I have not had a single email problem since I did that. 100% success. Thus proving that the problem is that Godaddy has compatibility issues with Outlook. They told me its Outlook that has compatibility issues with Godaddy! ARE YOU SERIOUS GODADDY?!!So we have to call Bill Gates and tell him to fix Outlook so it works with Godaddy?

I'm done with them. If this isnt fixed soon I am definitely moving all of my accounts away from them.

January 24th, 2012 2:38pm

Robert, I'm getting the same message and I'm having the same problem. If it wasn't intermittent it wouldn't be so hard to figure out.  I've used godaddy for years and I have never had this problem. This started towards the end of December. I have 3 SMTP email providers that I use in my Outlook program. The ONLY one that gets immediately rejected is the Godaddy account. I get 15%-20% failure when forwarding or replying to an email using godaddy. I have 100% success rate from my other accounts using the same Outlook. Why? I'm convinced that its a Godaddy firewall issue. Email is not getting bounced by the server because it never gets to the server.  For some reason it gets identified and blocked as an intrusion by the godaddy firewall. Outlook realizes the email never makes it to the destination server and it generates the following error code. No email header from the server because it never got there!

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

We are having the same problem.  After GoDaddy blamed Outlook, I updated from Office 2007 to Office 2010 and it seems to have solved the problem (about a week so far).  One of my co workers has the problem now and Office 2010 did not solve it.  GoDaddy insists "its not their problem" !

Denial is a bad approach and will hurt them.

January 24th, 2012 7:32pm

I'll agree that the provider has issues, but let's figure out why
it was an issue with APLUS.net provider as well, this is when all my problems actuall started..

switching over to Godaddy was an after thought only because I have my other business with them..

Also if I send emails from the 'aflicted' account , from my home using the same godaddy servers I never see the issue....

I have no idea what the real problem is, and will not discount the provider, godaddy or anyone else...

but it sure looks like it's an internal issue with the Office 2007 outlook, as a side note I use 2010 everwhere else with no issue

Q: could it be a configuration issue with outlook 2007 security settings due to one of the automatic updates ?

it's suspicious that 'all' the office computers started acting up the same day....

the server uses MS Echange for the Mail clients contact data base.

I'm baffled for sure , but thanks Gary for keeping the thought's moving..

As you can seee these are the same issues

thanks to all

Robert,

I have 5 users with the same issue. 3 are using 2010 and 2 are using 2007 so we have to rule out a specific version being the sole reason.

This is happening on Win 7 and XP so we can rule out OS

It almost happens when you reply or forward an email

When the outgoing SMTP server is changed to anything else the problem goes away. It only happens when I use Godaddys server even though its not making it to the server.  strange

So far you seem to be the only person to report that this same error code appeared using a different provider. That has me even more confused.

Great info Gary..

I agree, the office is my Brother in Laws business, and he calls me for computer stuff, but this one is a stumper..

they have been running all day (today 24th Jan) with no issue but yesterday (Monday) after being away all weekend

with machines OFF they had issues most of the day...

just a note I mentioned before..... their problem started about two weeks ago on a tuesday and all at once...
they had no issues for years...

I'm wondering if the AT&T connection and their upgrade to the UVerse crap is part of the issue...

Hell I don't know at this point...    the reason I moved them away from APLUS net is because they said it was an OUTLOOK issue

and I thought it was the servers....

SO :    maybe there is a common usage thread that the providers and their servers have issue with...this would explain
the commonality with APLUS and GoDaddy...

I have read some other items on the outlook security settings from other folks, saying it was too strict...
but this sure looks like an 'implant' and I hate to say the word 'virus' , as I have scanned with the latest Norton and it gives a clean bill of health
on the systems...

( scratching bald head ... .still )

January 24th, 2012 9:35pm

IMO, I have to say that it's not likely an outlook problem because I am also experiencing it. and I use godaddy and mozilla thunderbird. 5 different users, 3 XP, 2 win7. all thunderbird/godaddy.  the problem is the same as this thread describes, godaddy refuses to take ownership whether it's there problem or not.  based on every forum thread I've read the common denominator seems to be GD.... new emails with pdf attachments are the ones that don't make it to the SMTP servers. it's been VERY intermittent for 2 weeks. so much so I ignored the problem for the first week thinking godaddy would have fixed it by now.

iamkevin..

Question:  is your System Administrator bounce back mail instant ?

Can anyone explan how the servers at godaddy can respond this quick ?  It usually takes a few seconds to
log in and identify before sending the regular mail.

the bounce back on our side it shows up almost after you press the send key..

So then if godaddy is the issue, then they have really fast response times !

what am I missing....

PS I am not a GoDaddy advocate, just don't want to place blame with out all the real facts... and not assumptions
on what it 'might' be...

thanks

January 25th, 2012 12:55am

The error does show up relatively quickly. I have 4 accounts linked to ThunderBird, the day I was having the problem was Jan 10.
I could not send a new email from GD. It was a simple email, all text no attachments. I hit send and within a couple seconds got
the equivalent 552 error for TB. I copied/pasted the recipient & text to the my gmail account in TB and it sent without issue.
This happened within 2 minutes of hitting the send button. I don't have anything goofy setup, GD uses its own smtp and
Gmail uses its own smtp. I had same problem the next day with the same result. Since then my account has not had a problem,
but 4 other accounts under our domain have had this problem with one being as recent as yesterday.

And don't let response time mislead you, if you have multiple accounts in your outlook, try sending a simple email from 1 to another.
I can typically receive that email within seconds of hitting send. I just sent one from GD to 3 of my accounts (including back to GD)
and they all had it in under 5 seconds.

The email that was rejected yesterday morning was text and an attached PDF of a scanned in document.
The error does come up within a few seconds. There was a TB version update (12/23/11) but nothing else has changed on
these computers. I have 20 GD accounts under this domain and have only experienced the problem on 5 accounts.
(assuming the other 15 are not withholding information from me.)

I'm not necessairly sour on GDs service they provide (cheap & normally reliable), or putting them 100% at fault,
but the lack of support is my biggest annoyance. They keep asking for header information which there is none since
there is no relay to a server, and they keep suggesting there is a virus. We run Symantec and it has yet to detect anything.
They offer zero support and refuse to put anytime in to help out several customers of theirs who have similar problems.
Check out the GD forum, there are multiple threads about this issue over the last two weeks.

Since this is such an intermittent issue, I cannot think of any setting in Outlook or TB that would be causing this. Besides, if I
wanted to fix email problems, I would host our own server.......

I'm also annoyed because I have attempted to post responses in their forums with regards to this issue, and only 1 out of 5 responses have actually been posted. After you hit submit, it goes to a "moderator"? Which begs the question, what else are they NOT posting to the forums???

The last GD update to this issue (yesterday morning) referenced

"We are currently in the process of improving our filtering system, and are continuously tuning it as it is rolled out."

Thanks kevin...

good info,  this is strange, and even tho my bro in law's issue started even before I switched him over to GD
I won't exclude GD or any provider..

but since it seems to be so instantaneous when the return msg appears, I'm having a hard time seeing it get past the

'local' machine to a server and then have it post the System Admin error msg.  I mean I would hit the SEND and the inbox
Sys Admin msg would show up, even for ATT isp that is way too fast.. it looks like an outlook security setting issue, or filter setting.

I think we will find an answer as long as we keep sharing info...

Just a side note, yesterday I changed all my Bro in Laws employee email address's and since they have not had an issue...

??? does Outlook have a list of possible spam senders and log that email address as spam ?

the GD rep suggested I right click on the sender and under the JUNK setting set that email address to 'accept' them as not spam
also accept the 'DOMAIN" name.   This seemed to help.  but not sure if it is fixed since I do not know the cause...

Making a Fix to the symptoms can be misleading, when you really need to fix the problem !

and I don't know the 'real' problem...  YET !

I plan on browsing the Outlook forums for security stuff, maybe others can do so also and share any info with us..

thanks

Do people not read the previous threads? We have been working on this for days and still the same questions come up. Why is the bounce back coming so quick? Because there is no bounce back. A bounce back is a response from a server. It gives you information on why your email was bounced. The error code 552 is an Outlook message, NOT A BOUNCE BACK. Your email is not even making it to the server! Your email is getting blocked by the Godaddy firewall before it gets to the server. The firewall sees it as an intrusion for some reason and stops it in its track. Outlook sees the message getting blocked and reports back to you that your message cannot be sent due to a virus or spam. The firewall WILL NOT BOUNCE YOUR EMAIL BACK TO YOU. It will simply throw it aside and move onto the next threat. I have reported this to Godaddy via email, phone and on the user forum. They refuse to acknowledge the problem and continue to say the problem is with Outlook even though the common thread with everyone of us on this forum is........ Godaddy... Go figure
January 25th, 2012 3:33pm

Ok   I think we are reading the previous threads ,but understanding may be another issue..

I just realized what you are saying,  FIREWALL, this would make sense.

But would it really be instantaneous ?   I mean milliseconds.... ?  as fast as I can hit the SEND, the SYS ADMIN fail msg shows up  in the INBOX

can this be expected ?

Gary, I see you posted to this thread. I agree, whether they refer to it as filtering or a firewall, to me this is their problem.  That thread is the first I've noticed them admitting they have a problem and not blaming Outlook, TB, or something else.

  • Edited by iamkevin Wednesday, January 25, 2012 4:46 PM
January 25th, 2012 4:40pm

Robert, no it wont be milliseconds but it could be less than a second and yes, we are all experiencing the same fast response.

Try this and see if the problem goes away.

Set up another email account in Outlook. Call it Rob 2 or something. Use ALL the same info but instead of using Godaddy SMTP server on this email address. First go to smtp2go.com and sign up for a free smtp forward service. It takes a minute or two. Then on the new account you created in Outlook us the SMTPout server as smtp2go.com. So everything will be the same on this second account EXCEPT for the SMTP server.

If you get an email that gets rejected using your standard email account, send it using the Rob2 account. I promise you it will go through. WHY? Because you are bi-passing the Godaddy Server and firewall. If it was an Outlook problem it would happen no matter what SMTP server you use. Proving this is a Godaddy problem.

No I haven't read anything about the change. I agree that the post on the GD user forum is the first I see that they even admit there is an issue. We'll probably see that they will fix it and not tell us. That way they wont have to admit being wrong. They'll end up saying they didn't change anything but i will magically go away.

This is an update I received from GD Tech support.. .

"As to why these errors are being encountered, we are currently in the process of improving our filtering system, and are continuously tuning it as it is rolled out. This is why when encountering a 552 error, you are only encountering it intermittently based on the servers your messages are being routed through. To better adjust our filtering system and reduce the blocking of legitimate messages, we need either the bounced 552 reply or the original message that triggered this error. As you have not provided an attached .EML copy of either, our advanced support will not be able to assist in correcting this matter till the information has been provided."

Why is it so hard to understand the message has no info on which server rejected it? I'm not familiar with the wording of the 552 error, but from the earlier posts, it appears that there is no server information to supply them. At least that's the way it is with TB.

I  have to resort to posting to only this forum because the majority of my posts to the GD forum don't seem to go through... If I knew a legitimate alternative to GD I would have switched by now. Any suggestions? They provide domain services, and host webspace & email for us. CHEAP (I suppose we get what we pay for....those dumb $1M superbowl commercials)

You'll have to pardon some of my technical ignorance.  About 3 weeks ago we started receiving 552 and 554 messages. We tied it to a link that we were putting into our emails.  We confronted GD and just like everybody else we got the run around. We moved one of our domains to a new provider. The problem still persists.  For this reason, I'm not sold that this is a GD problem.  My guess is that Microsoft has made some sort of update that has tripped a number of ISPs in the process.  We tested the same emails being sent from our iphones...and no problems.  We sent emails from the web based mail...and no problems.  And just because the response time is fast doesn't mean that the email can't have already made it to the receipients server and been blocked.  The message even states, blocked for spam or virus content.  This seems to be more around the communication of content that is being reviewed by Microsoft filtering.

Sorry guys, just got hit again with the SYS ADMIN failure notice on an outgoing email..

Here in FLA we are upgrading ATT to UVERSE crap...

just as a poll   how many of us having this issue use ATT ?

 I DO !

I also see my Windoes Internet Explorer go 'NOT RESPONDING" all day long ...  I know this is a different issue
but wanted to throw this problem on the table in case of a UVERSE link..

I had no issues with IE until  the day after the upgrade...

we are paying way too much for this kind of service.... and worst of all they have us by the Bells since we are so
intrenched in the net.

ok  off soap box..

We have noted that the emails bounce when there are links or attachments.  But if the email is all text, we don't receive a bounce back message.  We have godaddy and 1and1.com for our hosting accounts.  It doesn't matter which one we use we still get the bounce back.  We still contend that this is not a godaddy issue.  We think that it must be tied to firewalls on the other side. Whether it is McAfee or security within Windows, we cannot tell.  But it is also clear on McAfee's site that there seems to be something going on.

Kevin..

same on our end, I'm not conviced that GD is the 'issue', I've read that security setting can affect this as well.

and if I remove links and pictures, same as you, the messages go thru fine..

so it seems to be flagging the links and other junk as SPAM...  sounds like a filter has gone wild...

January 27th, 2012 5:02pm

hey guys, I was having the problem with just text if I forwarded a message. I haven't changed a thing on my end yet the issue has completely gone away. All emails for over 3 days now have gone through without incident.

I just encountered the error. and yes, it popped up in under a second.

No attachment, just text and a hyperlink in my signature that's been present for every email I've sent for the past 3 years on GD.....

I  left the compose window open didn't change a single thing in the email, and approx 30 mins later I hit send again and away it went without issue (assuming it makes it to the recipient). the ONLY difference was 30mins of elapsed time, resulting in POSSIBLY a different SMTP server that it tried to relay through. That's what I suspect at this point. perhaps they upgraded or added a relay server. that would explain the intermittent nature of this annoying problem.

other Kevin,

are you referring to bouncing emails as emails reaching an SMTP server, and you are seeing a return email in your inbox stating your email did not go through to the recipient?

or are you referring to a message window that pops up in outlook, (or my case thunderbird) like the one I posted?

After much frustration, I had to switch our email to a different host site.  Cost me $170 but I have not had one email kicked back for a 552 error.  I have same Outlook, same antivirus and firewall, same email address.... Its not from any of those issues... Its a GoDaddy issue that I could no longer live with... maybe less money on commercials... more effort on problem solving.

This is after I sent them 3 sample of the blocked message. Dear Gary, I understand you have an isssue with sending email using our smtpout.secureserver.net and the message being blocked. If you have a copy of the actual message that you are sending we can determine what in the message is being blocked by our firewall or server. One thing you may want to try is if the email contains a link or an image to a link try sending without that if it goes then this is the part of the message being blocked by our server or firewall and will need to be removed. Please let us know if we can assist you in any other way.

Still having the prob as of this morning.  But only had it once yesterday.

I'm Win 7 / Outlook 10 / Godaddy (not MS exchange) I'm finding that if I close and reopen outlook, messages that were being return before the restart can be resent after the restart.

I've also notice in outlook that there is a high chance that the email will go thru when I resend the original email sitting in my sent folder but not when I select the resend option on the returned 552 message.

As for the timing, on my laptop it is literally the instant I hit send, I see the 552 message appear on the inbox. I don't know whree the problem lies but given how fast the 552 message appears after hitting send, it seems improbably that there is even a chance for the message to get to any server.

do your mishaps occur when you 'reply' to an email

AND / OR

New emails

reason I'm asking is because I have GD and have NO issues, but if I try to

reply to my bro in law's email (which he is having this problem with his domain name)

I 'sometime's get the SYS ADMIN spam bounce but it has only happened when
his reply email had HTML and not Plain Text.

It never occurs on Plain text replys   'and'   it never happens to any other email
I send to anyone else using the GD servers..

I've spouted out before about ther rollout of the ATT Uverse upgrade and still think
this should be a suspect.   (no real eveidence to suggest it is the problem, but do not
want to over look the Ghost in the room)

Also do you use ATT copper ? and have you been upgraded to Uverse recently
ATT give you new dsl modems when you are upgraded...
(I'm using UPgraded loosely)

thanks

I have 20 accounts under the same domain name. Half of us use Thunderbird (because I don't like Outlook and refuse to pay for it) the other half use Webmail through secureserver.

The half that use TB see the problem with ANY type of email (and in the last 24hrs I would say over 50% have been initially rejected). New emails, with and without attachments and URLs, sent to people in our domain and people outside our domain. Also replies to emails with and without attachments and URLs, sent to people in our domain and people outside our domain. There is no common denominator like GD keeps trying to tell me. (They are blaming URL links but I've had 2 this morning that don't have URL links...) This started on 01-09-2012.

The half that use the secureserver webmail have NOT had this problem at all in these 4 weeks.

Our ISP is Qwest/Century Link.

Wow, I just got what I feel is a pretty good answer from a GoDaddy customer support person.  Here is the recap:

In 2003, the Can't Spam Act was implemented.  Since then, large email hosting companies like GoDaddy have had to constantly balance the filters on their servers.  If a certain email account gets flagged as spam, sometimes the entire server gets shut down until GoDaddy can either adjust the filters or weed out the problem customer who is spamming.  This causes a lot of other emailers whose emails go through that same server to have an interruption in their service.  Therefore, Godaddy (and other email hosting companies) are constantly walking a fine line.  If they make the email filters too strict, the server overreacts and treats our harmless emails as spam or a virus.  If they make the filters too loose, then the whole server may be shut down because of a spammer. When I asked why it goes through if I try to resend the email, he said it's because different servers have different filters and he reminded me that it is a constant balance they will always be working on.

This customer service representative agreed that this is a big pain for all of the non-spammers out there and they are constantly working on this.  When I asked what solutions we had, he said I should try removing hyperlinks in my emails to see which link was being flagged as spam or a virus.  I complained and said that really was inconvenient for me to do and he agreed, but also admitted that that's the best he can do and GoDaddy is always working on this issue.  He also mentioned that I would probably have this same issue if I were to change to a new email hosting company because they are held to the same Can't Spam Act regulations.

He did mention that, if we got a personal hosting server, this probably wouldn't be an issue because the filters would be a lot looser, since it would be just our emails going through that server.  It would cost extra money, however.  So, I'm going to try removing the hyperlinks in my emails to see if that works.  If not, I may just have to upgrade to a personal server.

everything from microsoft outlook, my virus protection program and my computer. instead of taking the responsibility and admitting there is a problem

they are causing even more frustration for there customers by lying. i have just moved my hosting to another company.

(shame on you godaddy) company is not tested at the time of sale but at the time of service & go daddy have failed the test.

OK - so I have been dealing with this issue off and on with GoDaddy for about 4 years now (and YES, it is most definitely a GoDaddy problem). It just started back again on me after almost 12 months of error free emailing. Most of our problems have come from when we are in the middle of a string of emails and we start attaching files.

Tonight - I sent the emails that would not send as "replies" with attachments as new, virgin emails and clicked the "high importance" button - and ironically, ALL of them went through - with the attachments. I then tried to re-send one of the original emails that has several replies - got the 552 error message again.

Here is where it gets even more interesting: after the customer and I exchanged emails twice from the "new virgin" emails, I tried to send a new attachment and got the 552 error. Started a completely new email, added the attachment, clicked on the high importance button - and it went through.

Next week, we will be shopping for new email servers and hosting packages. All in all, I am very happy with Outlook - not so much with GoDaddy.

There is a bigger problem here !!!

Why is this so confusing for you?  There are dozens of other people here who have narrowed it down to being a GoDaddy problem (that's the reaosn I found this thread too).  You are having a different problem.  Two separate problems don't make a "bigger problem".  It honestly is beginning to sound like you work for GoDaddy and you're trying to point the finger elsewhere.

As far as the 552 error and how quickly you are receiving it, this is not a bounce message.  A bounce message would be an email that is accepted by the remote system (250 OK) and then returned to the sender for some delivery or policy issue.  What you are getting here is, during the transmission of the message, their server is responding with a 552 status instead of 250.  The email client immediately sees that and creates a new "message" in your local inbox telling you about the 552 and delivery failure.

Your local service provider should have an outbound SMTP server available for your use.  From all of the people who have been getting the runaround, your best bet may be to switch your outbound to them.  It doesn't resolve the problem of GoDaddy aggressively filtering messages at the edge servers, and it probably won't be a solution if you're a mobile user, but it may resolve some relief for those that just need to send email from a desktop in an office.

Not confusing at all , I want proof....  after switching from APLUS NET for the 'exact' problem ( NOT DIFFERENT )
to GoDaddy the issuse is still present, so two separate ISP's show the same issue...

The 'bigger problem' as charged is not knowing what the real problem is and guessing based on the symptoms.

If you are sure it is GoDaddy servers, fine , tell us exactly what the problem is, not the symptom. we all share the same
symptoms.

I have Godaddy on my personal business and have no issues with mail whatsoever, so if it was the GoDaddy servers then
why does my business not share the same ill's as my brother in law's ?

I will not be so quick to point the finger at one ISP without the facts, that is irresponsible, I prefer to know the truth and
so far I have not heard anyone share evidence to the real 'problem' , we are only sharing our symptoms, guessing and mostly
looking to blame 'someone'.

I've talked with the GD folks in excess, some were helpfull, none were conclusive, so this is still not solved for me.
I'm not going to bear the burdon of moving to another ISP, (again), APLUS.NET and GoDaddy have exhibited the same issues
on my bro-in-laws office machines over the past 2 months.   Some days are better than others....

I'd ask everyone to offer evidence of the exact point of issue, if not then we keep asking and looking and sharing...

I don't expect this to just go away until, we get some expert involved and he/she points to the problem that we can all experience and fix.

February 23rd, 2012 8:00pm

I run a online business in which we send marketing emails via an outside server to our existing clients....not unlike you getting a coupon from amazon, etc.

Our marketing emails come from a DKIM verified server, not a Godaddy server...but we were using GoDaddy for outbound SMTP, for basic office email in and outbound for our company.

All of a sudden, we started getting all these BS  552 SID message rejected for spam and virus content.  I did the same as everyone else here, called Go Daddy, they insisted it was McAfee/virus/firewall and everything but them.

After 2 weeks of emails failing, I dropped Go Daddy, switched to SocketLabs and haven't had an issue since.

Basically, go daddy is a domain seller, not an email provider....they suck at it...switch and you'll be fine.

Try a free trial of socketlabs...bet when you use a DKIM email server with some trusted authority on the Internet, your problem will disappear.

Basically, the answer to your problem is that cableone, godaddy, aplus.net and they guys that offer email smtp services as a side bar to their main business aren't equipped to handle large volumes of mail and don't have good trust relationships on the internet with spam filters, etc.

switch to any DKIM verified email provider and you won't have an issue.  it doesn't have to be socketlabs...that's just what I chose.

I'm not sure why GoDaddy webmail works, but 'm sure this is a content filter of some type on their firewall or email security device using some sort of reputation based system for websites.  Cisco and Barracuda are two that I know of that use web reputation based filtering.

GoDaddy techs - you need to get your head out of your arse and tweak your settings (or turn off the feature entirely) until it works without so many false positives.  Get on the horn with Cisco (or whoever) to get this worked out.

Not sure if this is true for everyone but I contact GoDaddy support.  They had me send them the bounce back error message.

Turns out my toll free number in my signature block had been marked as spam and were therefore being rejected.  How or why, I have no idea as both of the numbers are for incoming communications only.  They supposedly removed the numbers from the "list" and I didn't have any problems for a couple of weeks.

Then last week, the problem reappeared.  I contact Godaddy again on Fri and while I've not heard back from them yet, I'm not having any problems this morning.

Good Luck

May 7th, 2012 4:35pm

30AGuy -

I had the exact same experience you had.  I had this 552 problem, emailed GD and after a long email chain back and forth they finally fixed the problem by changing something on their spam filters.  Then on May 1st it started again.  I had not had the problem since early February, not even once, then all of a sudden something changed.

It is definitely a GD problem, not an Outlook problem.  They fixed it once for me and they can fix it again.  The problem is they make it so freakin' difficult to get it taken care of.

Best Answer: Keep complaining to GoDaddy until they do something about it permanently.

Second Best Answer: Drop GoDaddy when your renewal is up and go with another hosting company or do what others did and use an email service.

Hope this helps someone . . .

What Go Daddy needs in order to fix these problems is an .EML file.  Unfortunately, this type of block doesn't create the .EML file when you ctl alt F.  That causes the support team to be at a loss.

If you forward the TXT file to your support rep, (if he's helpful) he can convert it to the .EML file that Tier-2 needs to see why you're being blocked.

Believe me, I've been fighting this problem for months and I'm just as frustrated as the next guy.  But I did finally get a resolve email from Go Daddy today because ONE rep out of the several I've talked to, finally took initiative and was willing to help an extremely frustrated business owner.

Keep on them!  Don't give up!  This can be resolved!

July 27th, 2012 2:25pm

Following up. GoDaddy Fixed us!  All is well once again in the world.

Two weeks ago we had the exact 552 errors that you all have been reporting.  For our company in New Jersey this disaster went on for over a week, a real killer for us and our business.  We emailed, and we called, and we cried, and we begged to everyone and anyone at GoDaddy, multiple times a day.  Yeah, we have to make ourselves become an annoyance for GoDaddy.

We knew all along it wasnt our outbound email messages or content, since everything failed.  But we complied anyway and started sending in some EML files, per tech support's request, of simple plain text emails that failed.  I recommend to anyone getting the 552s to send in similar EMLs to support whether you agree with the approach or not.  We think that they want the EML just to see and validate our source domain and IP path and then white-list us by domain name on their firewall(s) which is where we're pretty sure the root cause of their 552 bounce backs exists.

FINALLY, we got this email last weekend, "Thank you for contacting Advanced Technical Support about your issue related to the 552 bounce backs you were receiving. We have submitted the message to be marked as non-SPAM to our filter. The changes to the filter may take a few hours to go into affect. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we worked to correct this issue."

We have not seen a 552 error since, it's been about a week now of trouble-free email.  We share this in hopes that GoDaddy fixes this now for everyone and into the future.

Good luck.

I had this 552 bounceback sending mail problem for 2 weeks, it was affecting only a few users and randomly. I read through all this forum with no straight answer and after the 4th time dealing by phone with godaddy customer service they finally gave me an answer.

The problem is:

your domain has been added to the spam blocking list and they have to remove it from there.

They sent me the following email:

Dear Valued Customer, Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. At this time we have reviewed your concerns of getting a "552" bounceback when sending emails. We have submitted the information provided to our development staff and it should be removed from our filters in a few hours. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. We recommend reviewing any email marketing you are doing and make sure you have a valid unsubscribe process, as well as validate your list of marketing recipients to reduce the amount of possible spam flags from recipients. It's possible that while some people receiving your messages have signed up for them, some have simply marked them as SPAM instead of going through the unsubscribe process if one exists. If you find yourself marketing more with your email, we find many of our users consider our Express Email Marketing service that does offer an subscribe/unsubscribe feature. It also provides details on who's actually receiving/reading their emails instead of just deleting them or marking them as SPAM.

So, what you have to do is keep pushing them until they send you the same email. I hope this information works for you.

My issue with 552 error msgs related to outgoing emails with attachments. All other emails went through without issue. Godaddy was of no help, other than to log and escalate my problem, with a promise of a call-back.

I figured I'd try a little trouble-shooting on my own. I used the godaddy web portal to send the same email with the attachment, and it went through without a bounce-back. That told me that my problem could be related to my Outlook email client, or my local AntiVirus/Firewall software filters.

I disabled my antivirus and firewall software and attempted to resend the email through Outlook. I got an immediate bounce-back. So, now I'm thinking that it might be an issue between Outlook and Godaddy's filters. It occurred to me, however, to examine the actual attachment a little more closely. It was an excel file, with a very long file name, with numbers, a special character (a hyphen), and upper and lowercase letters with words separated by spaces.

The thought came to me that perhaps the long file name with spaces and mixed characters could be the culprit. Following this brain-fart, I renamed the file to [one word].xls, and resent the email through Outlook. And Voila! No bounce-back.

My conclusion is that in my particular situation, Outlook's own filters was the problem, as sending that same email through godaddy's email web portal (along with the original attachment name) had no issues. Incidentally, I'm using Outlook 2010. I can't say whether previous versions of Outlook would have the restriction on file names.

Perhaps others have been having the same types of problems with attachments using Outlook through Godaddy's email hosting service. I'm hoping my experience might help some folks.

NOTE

I should add that some of my plain txt emails sent through Outlook are generating bounce-backs for no apparent reason. Sending the same plant txt email through godaddy's email web portal goes through with no bounce-backs. The only variable I can think of at this point is the godaddy outgoing pop mail server address, configured in Outlook.

Like one reader in the thread mentioned, I'm going to temporarily swap out godaddy's outgoing server address for ISP's, and then see if it makes a difference.

Skylark, has this solved your problem? I'm having the same issues, but can't make them go away. Godaddy is definitely no help. There is not rhyme or reason to the bounce-backs, sometimes its from an email chain that has gone back and forth for 4 or 5 emails then bounce. Doesn't seem to matter if there is an attachment or not, the bounce error is definitely not prejudiced to any one type of email or any particular domain, they are all fair game. The only thing that has worked at all was removing a hyperlink that was in my signature, thought I was done, but now getting bounced again, so that didn't work. I can't even send myself an email. I am not an email marketer, most of my emails are replies to emails that are sent to me and make it thru my anti virus.

If you or anyone else has any other ideas, I look forward to hearing about them.

Thanks,

I had the same problem -- messages sent from an e-mail account hosted by GoDaddy were blocked -- but the 552 error message was reported by Norton without mentioning GoDaddy; and I could send the same message from a different e-mail account hosted by Comcast. Because my copy of Norton was provided by Comcast, I assumed the problem was either Norton or Comcast or both. The problem appeared suddenly, and just as suddenly went away a day or two later; I assume GoDaddy noticed and fixed the problem. (Comcast support suggested the cause was corruption of my operating system or registry, and suggested I use System Restore to revert to an earlier setting. Fortunately, the problem went away without my doing that. So much for Comcast support.)

About 2 or 3 years ago I have similar problems to Message 552 (I dont remember the Error Code) and I could not find a solution and I find out about the existence of some Companies or Services  that check or inspect the traffic of Emails. ERick call then Filters?

Finally I managed to locate that company that setting my Account as an SPAM or something and I called them and to my surprise I was told that: that it was not a negative definition against my Email, but it was against the entire Godaddy Accounts because they do not follow the standards stablished (I dont know by whom?). I went back to Godaddy and they acknowledge they have problems and differences with that Service and they were negotiating for a solution!

Well, the negotiations.. it took two weeks period that I could no sent any Emails!

And now I have similar problems!

it's 3 years later now and we're having a similar problem. Messages sent from outlook get a simingly instant bounce back saying:

552 M5c21q0083QPxvR01 :: auth :: Message rejected for spam or virus content:

Has anybody figured this out yet?

This office uses Win7 with Outlook 2010, Macbooks with Outlook 2011 and Mackbooks with MacMail, Iphones and Ipads.

All devices and mail clients are getting the bounce backs.

Checked if the wan IP of the office was black listed, and if the domain was black listed. They aren't.

Help!!!
