Outlook could not create the work file. Check the temp environment variable. -  Office 2013 Pro Plus

Office 2013 Pro Plus

Hi all,

I recently got a virus (now removed) which has caused me some problems. When I try to open Outlook i receive the error message "Outlook could not create the work file. Check the temp environment variable." I was also getting the same with Word, but have now fixed this using KB 2285187

However, I am still getting the error when opening outlook and have tried the following:

1. Checked the registry keys in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders as per the above KB article

2. Attempted to "Move" the temporary internet files folder as per the anove KB article

3. Removing the OST file and allowing Outlook to create a new one

4. Completely removing the mail account via Control Panel > Mail and re-adding it

5. A full re-install of Microsoft Office 2013

I am also unable to attach documents as I receive an error stating that I do not have the correct permissions

Despite attempting all of the above, I am still receiving the eror and am at a total loss.

Anybody got any suggestions?

Seems that you have tried to fix it by KB 2285187 but I still need to confirm something below:

"2. Attempted to "Move" the temporary internet files folder as per the anove KB article"

- What did you type here? Double click on the Cache name to open it then edit it, entering the correct path as below:

Vista or Windows 7/8:
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files

Windows XP:
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

Meanwhile, open Control Panel, Internet Options or go to Internet Explorers Tools menu, Internet Options.
1.Internet optionsIn the Internet Options dialog, click the General tab. In the Browsing history section click Settings to open the Temporary Internet Files and History Settings dialog.
2.In the Temporary Internet Files and History Settings dialog, click Move Folder to open the Browse for Folder dialog.
3.In the Browse for Folder dialog, select the correct location for your Temp folder.

In Windows Vista, Windows 7/8, and Windows 2008 Server, look for the folder here:
C:\Users\user name\AppData\Local\ Microsoft\Windows

For Windows XP and prior versions of Windows:
C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Local Settings

4.Click OK to close the Browse for Folder dialog. Click OK to close the Temporary Internet Files and History Settings dialog. Click OK to close the Internet Options dialog.
5.Wait for content to migrate to the new location.
6.Reboot the computer when prompted.

Thanks.
