Outlook Search Feature

Might have been asked before but here goes. We have windows 7 sessions running on terminal service sessions using Outlook 2010 and exchange 2010 - this might be an a known issue but the search option will not search pst's users might have configured? Using the advanced find - Ctrl-shift-F does however work? - Is this a known issue? Playing with the indexing and user profiles appears to have no effect. Plus the search all and sub folders also has no effect.

Any help appreciated Gary H Devon

Does this happen to all the clients?

What exactly have you tried?

"Playing with the indexing and user profiles appears to have no effect. " - have you tried to disable and then re-enable the file for indexing? Or maybe rebuild the index and have a try.

Hi Gary,

Using an Exchange account in Outlook, normally, you should have .ost file as your data file. Could you please let me know what you mean by "will not search pst's users might have configured"?

Also, how many clients are affected by this? Are you in Cached Exchange Mode or Online Mode?

"Playing with the indexing and user profiles appears to have no effect" - I'm not quite sure what exactly you've tried, generally, to troubleshoot instant search issues, you can follow below steps:

  1. Check if the pst-file or mailbox has been marked to be indexed: File-> Options-> section Search-> button Indexing Options-> button Modify-> expand Microsoft Outlook
  2. Disable and then re-enable the file for indexing
  3. Rebuild the index
  4. Check for pst-file corruptions with scanpst.exe tool.
  5. Reinstall the Windows Search feature. If you are in Cached Exchange Mode, the instant search feature actually uses Windows Search feature. If it got damaged, you'll have search issues in Outlook.

Please try any steps that you haven't tried before in the list, and feel free to post back with any findings.

Thanks for your comments. The issues appear to be consistent across all Thin Client (terminal service sessions) - shared mailboxes you can search per folder basis and not sub folders which I know is a known issue. Users who have a pst (personal folder) setup cannot search unless using ctrl-alt-f (advanced find).

The users own inbox is searchable (ost)

Rebuilding the index has no effect or repairing the pst with the scanpst tool.

Hi Gary,

How this .pst file was added? Can you please elaborate a little bit on this?
