Outlook Exchange duplicating contacts
Environment - SBS 2008, Exchange 2007, Outlook 2007, iPhone. Background- I have a client that has Outlook 2007 installed on both a desktop and laptop. The user is also syncing Exchange data via Active Sync to an iPhone 4s. The user was previously using a BlackBerry syncing Exchange data via a BES Express server installed on the SBS 2008 server. To further complicate matters the user was also using Chapura Folder Mirror to sync BCM contacts to the BlackBerry. Problem - I swapped the BlackBerry for an iPhone 4s and after doing so the users contacts began duplicating exponentially. At first it would only duplicate specific contacts and then began duplicating all contacts. Eventually the user had over 75,000 contacts in Outlook and Exchange. Steps Taken - 1) The issue appeared to be the BCM contacts being dumped into the iPhone contacts folder on the iPhone and creating a loop. I installed a free Outlook duplicate remover and removed the duplicate contacts. I stopped the Chapura Folder mirror sync. No luck the contacts began duplicating again. 2) I used the duplicate remover and again removed all duplicates from Outlook. I checked the BES server and noted the users account was still active. I removed the users account and all BES info from Exchange. I verified all contact data in Exchange was correct using OWA, removed the ost file from the desktop and opened Outlook to reload the ost. I performed the same procedure with the laptop. I again verified the laptop and desktop were properly syncing contact data. All contact data was in sync on Friday. I checked on Monday morning and contact data was again duplicating. I am out of ideas and sanity. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Girish, Thank you for the links. The first link is very helpful and in fact my first step today was to turn off contact syncing on the iPhone. I am waiting to see if that resolves the issue. I forgot to mention in my post that I have also Verified there are no sync relationships in iTunes on the laptop or desktop Removed any add-ins such as linkedin that may cause a syncing issue The second link is not applicable. Thank you I will keep you posted on the progress.

Hi NFI, Any update for your issue? If it is SBS issue, it is better to post it on the SBS forum. I have also run into the same issue which cased by the third party device, maybe some issue when use the newest device to connect to the exchange server, most of the solution is delete theduplicate ones. Hi, I have a customer that had the same problem. I found 15 users where the amount of contact items were growing minutes by minutes until we disabled the use of ActiveSync on those mailboxes (set-casmailbox <mailbox> -ActiveSyncEnabled $false). This was just to be sure that the mobile phone was the root cause and it was. Then we wiped the phones and the problem was solved.Martina Miskovic

Here are the steps I took to resolve the iassue. It appears to be working. Since yesterday at 5pm there have been no new duplicates. I set Outlook to offline for both the laptop and desktop Deleted all Exchange contacts via OWA Deleted the ost file on both the laptop and desktop Wiped the iPhone Exchange account Opened Outlook on the desktop in cached Exchange mode and verified that the contacts folder contained zero contacts Imported a pst that contained a saved copy of the correct contacts on the desktop Verifed the contacts properly synced to Exchange Opened Outlook on the laptop and verified the correct contacts synced Recreated the exchange account on the iPhone and verified the correct number of contacts synced
