Outlook Autoconfig Not Working for all, Only works for some Accounts
Hi, i have a strange problem in that autoconfiguration is not working. I have a head office, and accounts there were setup no problem in Outlook automatically as soon as i clicked Outlook "Configure outlook dialog".
However on a site which is connected over a VPN, i log on with a new users account and all seems well. I then goto setup outlookbut instead of the orange progress bar scrolling and after a few seconds the name comes up, nothing happens and autoconfig fails and i have to enter the username and server manually!!
When i log onto the same machine with my account that i use in the main office, and setup outlook, it works with the orange band scrolling across and the account is setup automatically (no need to enter username etc).
Any idea on what is going on?
Many thanks in advance,
Chris

Hi,
Is all traffic allowed through the VPN ? It looks like the traffic is blocked for some strange reason. Have you looked in your event log for issues?

Hi,no traffic is not blocked further more the accounts that have been setup in the main office do work (i.e. i logged in and my assistant on our own accounts and Outlook performed the autoconfiguration)... seems to work for some accounts and not for others. On manual setup the email account does work so.
Any ideas?
Cheers

Hi Johan,
Thanks for taking the time to help it is verty much appreciated. I didnt check the logs i must admit, I will check first thing tomorrow. I have seen similair behaviour before with Exchange 2007 SP1, ive found times when autoconfig wont work when setting up new accounts, but as soon as i reboot the server it all works ok again. Very strange!
Cheers,
Chris

Hi Johan,
Not solved yet im just stating from experience! I reckon it might start working again with a simple reboot however, I will let you know.
Actually thinking of the above, exchange autoconfig should work without any reboot required!! Is this a reported bug already?
Will let you know tomorrow if reboot solves this issue.
Cheers,
Chris

How many instances of autodiscover service do you have in your org? It seems the users in remote office are affected. It may be worth to take a look at site affinity for auto discover service.

Domain Controller, Client Access Server and Mailbox Server, whereare theylocated? Are they in same site as the user?
This could be another interesting read:

Thanks for the reply. DC, CAS and Mailbox are all on the same site, they are a different subnet to the remote users which are connected over the VPN. Due to the small amount of users on the remote site (<15) there is no local DC there and a pure VPN connection only.
As mentioned accounts that are already setup in the main office do autoconfigure when logged into the machine as that user at the remote site. I will try and reboot the server also as i have seen this before.
Will revert tommorow.
Thanks again,
Chris

Hi,
I suspect this issue is caused by the users profile on the remote computer.
Now please use Network Monitor to capture the log of the communication between the client and Exchange server.
1. Download the Network Monitor 3.1 from the URL below then install x86 version on 32-bit machine and x64 on 64-bit
machine:
Microsoft Network Monitor 3.1
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=18b1d59d-f4d8-4213-8d17-2f6dde7d7aac&displaylang=en
2. Open Microsoft Network Monitor 3.1 and click Create a new capture tab.
3. In the right pane, click Select Networks and choose the network connection used between Outlook and Exchange server.
4. Click Tools -> Options and under Capture tab, type 100 in Size:. Click OK.
5. Press F10 to start capture.
6. Reproduce this issue until the error appears in Outlook, press F11 to stop network monitor on both Outlook and Exchange server.
7. Save then send the cap files to allensyr2003@hotmail.com
Thanks

Dear Allen,
Many thanks for offering to check the logs, please give me a few more days to obtain the logs.
Quick question, should these logs be run on the CAS box, or as i think is correct, the exchange mail box?
Many thanks,
Chris
